Chelsea's Tammy Abraham on verge of joining Newcastle

Napoli's Pepe Reina has been a target for Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez this summer

Newcastle United are reportedly "on the verge" of snapping up Chelsea's Tammy Abraham on loan.

Newly-promoted Newcastle United will move for unsettled former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, reports The Mirror.

Manchester City have also been in touch with the 34-year-old, who has 12 months left on his current deal but is set to quit Serie A after two seasons.

A deal could be clinched within the next 48 hours as the Toon Army remain aware of surrounding interest on their transfer target.

The Daily Mail claims that Chelsea initially wanted the youngster to merge into the first team, but the close relationship between technical director Michael Emenalo and Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has changed the plan.

Abraham has fast become one of the most exciting young English forwards after a blistering loan spell at Bristol City in the Championship.

Antonio Conte can not guarantee him regular first team chances next season, and will ship him out to a fellow Premier League club to develop his career.

Leicester and Brighton were keen to sign the 19-year-old striker, who scored 26 goals on loan at Bristol City last season.

They hope Abraham will enjoy a season of regular top-flight football before returning to compete alongside the club's established stars.

For Abraham's sake, it will be a test he will want to take on on Tyneside if he wants a future at Chelsea. But of course, the club's supporters fully trust Benítez's judgment.
