Congressional Baseball Game carries on, one day after shooting

A victim is transported at the scene of a shooting in Alexandria

The man who shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice earlier this week had with him a piece of paper with doodles and the names of three lawmakers, according to a person familiar with the case.

President Donald Trump sent a video message to the game, highlighting Scalise who remains in critical condition on Thursday after several surgeries.

"Steve in his own way may have brought some unity to our long-divided country", Trump added. Members usually sport the uniform of their home states and districts, and although proportional representation is not required, elected officials of many states play to win every year. Socialist Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, for whom the shooter had campaigned, said he was "sickened" by a crime "against our most deeply held American values". The hospital said he would require additional operations and said he remained in critical condition as of Wednesday evening.

The congressional baseball game will be played at Nationals Park Thursday night, just a day after Rep. Steve Scalise was shot and critically injured in Virginia.

Both teams prayed at second base, where Rep. Scalise was positioned at the time he was shot Wednesday.

A statement from MedStar Washington Hospital Center released late Wednesday said the bullet that hit Scalise "travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding". The fact that his injuries brought him close to death was not widely known initially. Over social media he had lashed out at Trump and the GOP. Every year, with a few interruptions, Senate and House members of each party solidify friendships off the floor and on the field. Thirty-three Republicans and 26 Democrats put their political differences aside for a night of baseball. They signed oversized cards for the wounded.

Republicans won the game last year, ending a seven-year winning streak for Democrats.

A day later, Pelosi and Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., were trading recriminations over which side's overwrought rhetoric was more responsible for violence.

"Tonight we will go to the game, play our hardest, but we will all be Team Scalise", House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi told reporters.

"How dare they say such a thing?" They said he was in good spirits and had spoken to his wife on the phone. She noted that she has received numerous threats herself over the years, and is now the target of millions of dollars in negative ads in a House district in Georgia where a hard-fought special election will take place next week. "It's Time to Destroy Trump & Co".

Scalise, the third most powerful Republican in the House, was shot through the hip.

Scalise is well known for his love of the game.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who was at the baseball practice, said he heard "at least 50 or 60 shots" during the shooting. Ivanka Trump, joined by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and her two eldest children Arabella and Joseph Kushner, presented a $50,000 check from "Friends in the Trump Administration" to "Congressional Sports for Charity" at the game.
