Critics say Trump tweets may undercut legal case

Former DOJ contender hits Trump over travel ban tweet

Trump's 140-character musings Monday may have undercut his own efforts to persuade the Supreme Court to reinstate his revised travel ban, which Trump called a "watered-down, politically correct" version of what he'd originally sought.

President Donald Trump on Monday derided the revised travel ban as a "watered down" version of the first and criticized his own Justice Department's handling of the case - potentially hurting the administration's defense of the ban as the legal battle over it reaches a critical new stage.

The US tourism industry faces the possibility of another "lost decade" of foreign visitors due to President Donald Trump's travel ban, a leading hotel executive said Monday.

Trump's tweets could cause him additional headaches in court, as the Justice Department has tried to distance itself from the original order in defending the new one.

He urged the Justice Department, which he oversees, to seek a "much tougher version" of the order. However, Trump's tweets in all capital letters refer to the executive order as "a TRAVEL BAN" on "certain risky countries" and said anything short of a ban would jeopardize the safety and security of Americans. "The courts are slow and political!" the USA president tweeted.

At this moment, Trump has not yet responded to Conway's retweet. "Can they say it's only a temporary ban if the president says that's bullshit?"

In an interview Monday with Britain's Channel 4 News, Khan said he does not have time to respond to tweets from Trump and said Britain should call off a planned state visit by the US president expected later this year. What Collins did in his "New Day" interview is make the case I made yesterday: That Trump's Twitter feed is more important than what his staff says is the White House's position. Painter told me that if the acting SG and his colleagues knew or should have known the temporary immigration suspension was a pretext for President Trump to ban immigration from the affected countries, they may have committed ethical violations. The travel ban, which is now in its second iteration, has already been blocked multiple times in court, with some judges suggesting it's meant to discriminate against Muslims.

People close to Trump told the Times that the president blamed Sessions's recusal for leading his deputy, Rod Rosenstein, to appoint a special counsel to oversee the Russian Federation inquiry.

Trump is going to lose in the Supreme Court.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals as well as the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals have heard arguments for and against the order that aims to prevent citizens from six majority-Muslim countries from entering the United States for a period of 90 days.

But Conway's concerns echoed the sentiment of many on Monday, who seemed to agree that the tweets, which are nearly certain to be brought up in future litigation, could do nothing but hurt the Department of Justice's efforts.

And Trump reiterated his support for the proposed ban, one of the signature policies of his first few months. "We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!"

"You can't judge a statute by what people say about it", he said.

The original order, signed at the end of his first week in office, was unveiled without significant input from top Trump national security advisers or relevant federal agencies.
