Danny Ainge hints that the Celtics weren't going to take Markelle Fultz

The Philadelphia 76ers will have the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft for the second consecutive year after making a trade with the Boston Celtics to allow them to select Washington guard Markelle Fultz. Josh Jackson from Kansas and Jayson Tatum from Duke are the current front-runners to be taken third overall. It was agreed to in principle at that point, with the last holdup being the customary league approval on the terms.

The upcoming NBA Draft has the most interesting draft class in recent history. "We feel like it's a jump-start for us". While this seems like a blockbuster move, which it is, I think it's just the first domino to fall in what is going to be an exciting offseason in the National Basketball Association. As for the Celtics, they add to the absurd war chest of first round draft picks accumulated (nine draft picks in the first rounds of the next two drafts) which they will nearly certainly be using as an all-out assault on bringing in existing franchise talent.

Or is it the Celtics, a very good team that just added more assets and a chance to select a player likely comparable to Fultz with the No. 3 pick on June 22? First-round picks from the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers in 2018 and the Sacramento Kings in 2019 could turn into lottery picks, giving Boston more leverage in free agency. After finishing with the No. 1 seed in the East this season, they are trying to package some of their picks for an established star that could help them close the gap on National Basketball Association finalists Cleveland and Golden State. For now, Boston has seven first-round selections in the next three years.

George has spoken in the past about a preference to play for his hometown Los Angeles Lakers, and it would be risky for the Cavaliers to acquire him without a promise he would sign beyond the 2018 season.

Ultimately, the Celtics don't have to be in a rush to make any move. "But we're not afraid of that". They selected Ben Simmons past year, but he missed all of the 2016-17 season with a broken foot.

With Thomas, the Celtics didn't necessarily need a point guard - which is the piece Philadelphia apparently wanted most. During his work at the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Season 2016-17, he was able to garner an average of 23.2 points, 5.9 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game. The Celtics are in a great position now since they have another future first-round pick and they secured a top three pick in this very special draft. "I think that we have several in the top five or six that could've fit a certain way and helped us along". "I can't wait for the draft on Thursday and continue to move forward".

The 19-year-old Fultz will join a line-up of young talent including 20-year-old Simmons, centres Joel Embiid and Jahlil Okafor, the No.3 picks in 2014 and 2015 respectively, plus Croatian forward Dario Saric.
