Democrats Search For Silver Lining After Narrowly Losing Georgia Election

BENNETT: Like Ryan, Congressman Seth Moulton of MA is also venting about the loss. "It should be a wake-up call for Democrats".

"There are a lot of really important battles that we came out of on top of even as the minority", he said. "It's time for some change". "It's time for Nancy Pelosi to go, and the entire leadership team". Moulton is a 38-year-old Iraq war veteran elected to Congress in 2014.

"I worry sometimes that we get so obsessed and angered by Donald Trump, which is okay, but you can't hold on to it because it takes your eye off the ball". I think our leadership owes us an explanation for what's going on in these four elections but also a plan moving forward.

Happily, American public opinion is far more liberal than it is conservative.

And GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger of IL noted: "There are local reasons (why Ossoff lost)".

For GOP consultants, the tie-every-Democrat-to-Pelosi is a tried-and-true strategy that's been working for more than six years. "They're obstructionists", he said to applause. Democrats and national media tend to think Trump is as unpopular in the heartland as he is among them, but that is not the case, CNN media and political reporter Dylan Byers said on the network following Ossoff's loss. "Pelosi is the human embodiment of that".

"They thought the elections last night were going to be a referendum on this president", White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday on "Fox and Friends".

In an interview with Breitbart News on the eve of the election, Handel said that Democratic voters in Georgia's sixth district did not mind that Ossoff lived outside the district, because she said Ossoff was "completely aligned" with Pelosi's positions. But miracles rarely happen in politics, and suburban Atlanta Republicans were loyal enough to their party to decide that it wasn't their job to deliver one.

Republican Ralph Norman on Tuesday defeated Democrat Archie Parnell by an even narrower margin - a little more than 3 percentage points - in a SC race that received far less national attention.

According to Atlantic monthly, "Compared with November's results, the GOP margins of victory declined from almost 16 points to 6 in Montana, 23 points to less than 4 in Georgia, 21 points to 3 in SC, and 31 to about 7 in Kansas. But in York and Lancaster Counties, which include suburbs and exurbs of Charlotte, North Carolina, where more than half of the vote in the special election was cast, Norman, won 55%-44%. "To come within a hair's breath of winning that seat is nothing short of extraordinary", said House Democratic Caucus Vice Chairwoman Linda Sánchez, D-Calif. "I think we could make it look handsome, too".

"Look, they demonized Nancy in 2010, they demonized her in 2006".

Congressman Bill Pascrell of New Jersey said, "A loss is a loss is a loss, and there's no excuses".

Despite the backlash from some Democrats, Pelosi still has a strong base of support within the party. Pelosi's enduring role as a Republican punching bag revived debate over whether her leadership is an electoral drag on the party, or if she is simply a convenient (female) symbol for attacks on liberalism that the GOP would level with or without her.
