Fabulous Federer Trounces Zverev to Claim Ninth Halle Title

Roger Federer remains on course for a ninth title at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle after defeating Florian Mayer in the quarter-finals.

After clinching Grand Slam No. 18 at the Australian Open, Federer won back-to-back ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami to storm into the World Top-4 after starting the year as World No. 17.

In the semi-final, he eased past his Russian opponent Karen Khachanov 6-4 7-6 (5), to reach his 11th final in Halle. Khachanov then missed two set points before Federer took it to the tiebreaker.

The bare numbers hardly tell the tale: 6-1, 6-3 to Federer, 58 points to 33 overall, winning 79% of his service points, 52% when receiving. Federer has won seven titles, Novak Djokovic three, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal two each.

Roger Federer from Switzerland returns the ball to Karen Khachanov from Russian Federation during the ATP tournament tennis match in Halle, western Germany, on June 24, 2017.

He also beat Federer in the semi-final of this very tournament just a year ago.

Wimbledon starts on Monday, 3 July.

Federer, 35, has yet to drop a set after three matches in Halle this week while his win on Friday took his head-to-head record against Mayer to 8-0, with five of those wins coming on grass. But in a stunning performance against Barty, Kvitova battled back from losing the first set and stepped up in the second half of the decider to seal victory.

Zverev managed to hold his serve at the third opportunity, but Federer broke again at 5-1 to claim the first set in just 22 minutes.

"I played against a right-hander from the baseline in Sugita, a left-hander who serves and volleys all time (Zverev) and Mayer plays very differently to everyone else".

On the forthcoming clash with Federer, Zverev said, "Well, it's a final". He's also playing a brand of tennis that no one else can play. "I'm still just very happy how I was able to close it out in the breaker".

This is going to be a fun match between these two talented players, as Zverev is growing up before our eyes and Federer is, well, Federer.
