Former First-Round Pick CB Justin Gilbert Receives One-Year Suspension

The Cleveland Browns will open the 2017 National Football League season on September 10 when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Gilbert was originally suspended four games on May 25th for violating the substance and abuse policy. Expected to be a quality addition to the Browns secondary when he was drafted in 2014, Gilbert's professional career is now in jeopardy due to the combination of suspensions and poor on-field production.

After testing positive again, Gilbert was suspended for at least a year by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Both suspensions that Gilbert has received during his short career have been for substance abuse policy violations. Cleveland traded him to the Steelers before the 2016 regular season and played sparingly before being released in February.

A former first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns, Justin Gilbert never panned out with his original team. He finished the year with three tackles and three kick returns.

Gilbert started just two games in his rookie year and three total in two seasons with the Browns.
