Girl, 8, looks like a boy, soccer team disqualified

"When my hair starts to grow, I put it short because I always had short hair, so I didn't like my hair long", she said.

Reports emerged on Monday that an 8-year-old girl in Nebraska was caught in the crossfire at a local youth tournament.

Eight-year-old Mili Hernandez was not allowed to play in a Nebraska soccer tournament because the organizers thought she looked like a boy. "She even was crying after they told us", Gerardo said.

Mili's parents showed tournament officials an insurance card that shows Mili is a girl, but tournament officials wouldn't accept the card.

Mili plays for a soccer team called The Azzuri-Cachorros Chicas.

"I was mad", Mili's father, Gerardo, told the Washington Post. "They don't have a reason to kick the whole club out", she said. Mili's family believes the team was disqualified because of the way Mili looks. That wasn't enough and tournament organizers have since stood by the decision, only saying that the team can appeal the disqualification.

The soccer club would not comment to WOWT, and directed questions to an attorney.

"They didn't want to listen", Cruz Hernandez said.

So, let me get this straight: They assumed she was a boy because of her hair (which is ridiculous in the first place), but then, even after they were corrected, they still wouldn't let Mili and her team play? "While we are disappointed that a player was denied the opportunity to play, that decision was made by entities other than the Nebraska State Soccer Association". The team's coach said Mili's squad won two of the three games it played Friday and Saturday. Her skill on the soccer field? Not just at the mistake that made his daughter cry, he said, but at officials' unwillingness to hear him out.
