Gulf Crisis: Congress to Suspend Arm Sales to Gulf Countries, Senate Member

Sigmar Gabriel attend the weekly cabinet meeting at the Chancellery in Berlin Germany

In a quote reported by the "New York Times", Cardin said that he shares: "Senator Corker's concern that the current GCC dispute distracts from our shared, most pressing security challenges defeating ISIS".

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain ― huge consumers of American military technology ― cut off ties with Qatar on June 5 over its alleged support for terror and ties to Iran.

Corker's committee and its counterpart in the lower chamber, the House foreign affairs committee, have the ability to review arms deals once the executive branch officially proposes them.

On Saturday, Qatar announced it had received a 13-point list of demands by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE and Bahrain - to end the weeks-long embargo.

Congress has the power to block individual sales during a 30-day review period from when the state department gives notification of an impending sale.

They accused Qatar of aiding terrorist groups and Iran - charges it denied.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said the Saudi-led blockade against Qatar has sparked a humanitarian crisis inside the country, since critical deliveries of food and medicine have been held up as a result of the GCC action.

As chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Corker plays a central role in these sales.

Congress has never voted in favor of stopping a foreign military sale that's been formally notified - the latest attempt was a close 47-53 vote that failed to block a $500 million sale to Saudi Arabia - but the committee leaders have been able to play a role in stopping or delaying arms sales.

Corker's pledge to halt arms sales comes a day after Tillerson said that numerous demands would "be very hard for Qatar to meet".

They also imposed a trade blockade of Qatar, a travel ban on Qatari nationals, and even deported 15,000 Qatari-owned camels from their summer pastures in Saudi Arabia.

Qatar's foreign minister is expected to meet Tillerson today, as the deadline for responding to its neighbors' demands draws near.

On Sunday, he urged GCC nations to sit together to work out the dispute, adding that "a lowering of rhetoric would also help ease the tension".

In a sharp escalation of what many consider to be the worst Gulf State diplomatic crisis in years, Riyadh has tightened the crews, giving Doha just ten days to comply with its demands, although what punishment the kingdom intends to inflict upon the tiny country if it does not comply remains unknown. Since the list of 13 demands was presented, Tillerson has been non-committal, observing that some of them would be "very hard for Qatar to meet", but arguing there were "significant areas which provide a basis for ongoing dialogue leading to resolution".
