NBA Finals: Steph Curry takes a quick nap during Game 2

Cleveland's third star, point guard Kyrie Irving, struggled offensively with a 8-for-23 shooting night, fellow starters Tristan Thompson (eight points, four rebounds) and J.R. Smith (scoreless) were invisible again and no one on the bench stepped up leaving King James helpless for much of the night.

Coach Steve Kerr had hoped to be on the bench for Games 1, but opted to stay in the locker room as he continues to recover from difficulties from his back surgery nearly two years ago.

Friday, June 9: Golden State at Cleveland, 9 p.m.

LeBron James is attacking.

It did in the 2015 Finals, when the Cavaliers stole Game 2 after a loss in Game 1.

At the same time, Golden State will hope Klay Thompson will break out of his shooting slump after an unproductive series opener.

There are some impressive streaks that merit some mention going into Game 2 of the NBA Finals. He coached the Warriors to their first championship since moving West in 1975 and watched as a team ambassador as Golden State captured its first title since then two years ago.

Kerr explained why he was stepping away from the team during the Portland series.

Slowing down the Warriors killer transition offense is a must and requires communication amongst the Cavs as they hustle back down the floor. After struggling a bit in a four-game sweep of in in the first round, Cleveland turned it on against Toronto and Boston. Game 3 is Wednesday in Cleveland where the Cavs will look to regain the magic that helped them overcome deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 in last year's Finals.

If Cavs are to emerge victorious, they also need to make sure that they are tight on Curry and Durant, and stop them from scoring easy baskets. If the duo shines once again in Game 2, the problem will only multiply for the Cavs.

"What's our record now without me, like 800-12?" quipped Kerr, who missed the first 43 games during last season's record 73-win campaign.

Assistant coach Mike Brown served as the acting head coach and had an 11-0 record in Kerr's absence.

Kerr addressed the media during a pregame news conference and said he knew Sunday morning he would give it a go.

The Cleveland coach says Kerr is someone he respected even before he started coaching and is glad Golden State has its leader back.
