New Zealand opt to field against England

Jos Buttler stroked an unbeaten 48-ball 61 to help England go past the 300-run mark as wickets tumbled at regular intervals in the death

England advanced to the semifinals of a tournament it has never won with an 87-run victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy at a wind-swept Sophia Gardens on Tuesday.

But Jos Buttler s dashing unbeaten 61 off 48 balls, including a couple of extravagant sixes, helped take them to 310 all out.

'They say it's roughly a four-to six-week injury, and it's more likely to be towards the six when I am back playing competitive cricket'.

The 62-run stand for the second wicket finally ended when Stokes (1-46) had Guptill caught in the slips and it was once again the partnership between Williamson and Ross Taylor (39) that kept New Zealand in the hunt. As New Zealand's bowlers increasingly resorted to short balls, and the umpires stoutly ignoring the showers strafing the ground, it felt like hard work.

They take on Steve Smith's Australia on Saturday knowing a win will see them top their group and potentially knock their rivals out of the competition. Plunkett troubled both Williamson and Taylor, both of whom he hit on the helmet with rising deliveries.

Victory saw England, who beat Bangladesh by eight wickets at the Oval in their Group A opener, into the last four of a tournament featuring the world s top eight one-day global teams regardless of the result of their last pool fixture against arch-rivals Australia at Edgbaston on Saturday.

In England's innings, the adaptability of Joe Root - England's Williamson and one of three batsmen to pass 50 - was apparent from the outset, his game management in place as he worked the ball around.

In a bit of a hole after a brilliant start, England was 260 for 7 in 44 overs. Allrounder Ben Stokes continued England's healthy run-rate in the middle overs, making 48 from 53 deliveries, but the Kiwis took wickets at key intervals to remain very much in the contest, bowling out England in the final over for 310.

Adil Rashid (12) fell lbw to Santner despite reviewing the umpire's initial decision but thankfully for England Buttler found a steady partner at last in Liam Plunkett. New Zealand won the toss and invited the hosts to bat.

Buttler had little difficulty in carrying the load, bringing up his fifty by smacking Boult for six, though it looked as if England may be punished for a collective failure of those who got strong starts to kick on for a big score as New Zealand recovered from early jitters. We weren't too greedy, just hit the seam on a good length.

The England bowlers later on bowled with fire to restrict the New Zealand batting line up to 223 runs.

"In all areas England outplayed us today", Williamson said. Stokes proved a key threat with a knock that included four fours and two sixes before he looped an uppercut nearly straight to Milne at third man off Boult. A record of 47 runs at 6.71 in England one-day matches since his bench-warming exercise at the IPL reveals that impudence is now in short supply.
