NY subway riders stage graduation for student stuck on delayed train

When Jerich Marco Alcantara's excited friends and relatives piled into a New York City subway vehicle on Tuesday, they were hoping to travel from their home in Queens, New York, to Alcantara's graduation from Hunter College on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The only difference? Alcantara was unable to make the actual ceremony due to massive train delays.

Jerich Alcantara was on the E train traveling from Queens to his graduation ceremony that was scheduled for 10 a.m.at the college's Brookdale campus in Manhattan, Fox 5 NY reported.

His friends also threw him another "ceremony" when he finally got to the venue.

A friend presented Alcantara with a cell phone showing a mock diploma while another blasted a Green Day song.

"I took the video because I felt it was so unfair he was missing his graduation", onlooker Nadiya Afzal shared with PEOPLE.

According to his comment on a Facebook post, he and his friends left early; they could've been 40-60 minutes early for graduation if the train never had a problem.

Straphangers in NY know all too well what it's like to be late because of the subway.

As for his diploma, the president of Hunter College told the news station that she was looking forward to handing it to Alcantara personally.

"It was a great time", Alcantara said.

Following the ceremony Alcantara offered the other riders the opportunity to download the certificate via the Airdrop feature on their phones.

Alcantara says when he finally arrived at his commencement almost three hours later, his friends and family threw him a mini celebration.

"Everyone seemed to be in a brighter mood", Alcantara said.
