Ocean Unfriends Team New Zealand In America's Cup

Emirates Team Zealand have endured a dramatic day on the water, recovering from a broken wing sail to beat Land Rover Bar in the Louis Vuitton Americas Cup Challenger Play-offs, only to capsize in their fourth encounter.

As the clock in Bermuda ticks towards midnight, the Team New Zealand shore crew will be up against it to try and get the boat back on the water as soon as possible.

Team NZ lead the best-of-nine America's Cup semi-final qualifying series 3-1, after adding a win in the first race of the day to the two from Tuesday (NZT).

Burling said the boat had "sustained quite a bit of damage" in the capsize, but none of the crew was badly injured.

"I was very thankful when I was sitting up top to be able to look out the back and see all their heads above water and know they're all safe", said Burling, a 26-year-old Olympic gold and silver medalist.

But disaster struck even before racing began yesterday when they found themselves in a frantic bid to replace their damaged fixed wing sail in time to make the start of their first race.

Groupama Team France were eliminated after finishing bottom of the Qualifiers leaving four Challengers to contest the semi-finals over 9 races from through to June 8.

In the other semifinal match, Dean Barker sailed SoftBank Team Japan past Sweden's Artemis Racing on the upwind third leg and won by 23 seconds.

He's struggled for speed on his 50-foot foiling catamaran and been involved in three crashes, including a spectacular one on the first day of the qualifiers that nearly sank his boat.

"We've all got a few cuts and bruises, but nothing major".

Captain Ben Ainslie's crew was forced to throw in the towel after hearing a "bang" during what was set up to be a tight first race against New Zealand.

New Zealand held a 2-0 lead in their first-to-five playoff against BAR, after their rivals broke their wing in yesterday's opening encounter and could not fix it in time to line up for the second.

The Emirates Team NZ ACC boat dramatically capsized at the start of their second race against Ben Ainslie Racing and had to be towed back to dock for what looms as a long night of repairs for shore crew.

The first team to five wins goes through to the challenger final.

Team NZ 's boat on its side and its crew in the water.

And at the end of it all a terrifying "pitchpole" for New Zealand which left their boat badly damaged, their young helmsman Peter Burling under huge pressure, and Ainslie's British team with a lifeline.
