SCO summit: PM meets Ashraf Ghani, shakes hand with Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev (4th L), Chinese President Xi Jinping (3rd L), Russian President Vladimir Putin (4th R), Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif (Extreme Right) and other Heads of Delegations after inclusion of new Member States, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, in Astana, Kazakhstan on Friday.

Congratulating India on the full member status of the SCO along with Pakistan, the prime minister said it was a historic day for Pakistan and the SCO members as well and thanked the founding members including China, Russia and others for their staunch support to Pakistan to become its full-fledged member.

Putin also said that the decision to start the process of India's and Pakistan's admission to the SCO had been made during the 2015 summit in Ufa under Russia's presidency in the organisation, and stressed that these countries had fulfilled all requirements to enter the SCO in less than two years.

He assured that China will contribute with an additional 10 million yuan ($1.47 million USD) to the SCO Secretariat in order to facilitate its work.

India, Iran and Pakistan were admitted as observers at the 2005 Astana Summit.

We must continue the good tradition of solidarity and coordination, he stated. The fight against terrorism is an important part of the SCO cooperation, he said.

Sartaj expressed the hope that Pakistan enjoyed multi-dimensional ties with SCO countries and after becoming its full member, the opportunities in the realm of multilateral cooperation, land and connectivity and trade activities would get a spur.

Impossible to reach a solution till all make concerted efforts, on radicalisation, terrorist recruitment/training/financing issues.

"We have full faith that SCO would give a new push to fight terrorism", he said.

Mr. Modi also held an important bilateral meeting with President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistanand condemned the recent spate of bombings in the Afghan capital Kabul.

In a rare snub to all-weather ally Pakistan, Chinese President Xi Jinping skipped a customary meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the SCO summit in Astana after the murder of two Chinese teachers in Balochistan. The meeting came weeks after the Indian leader refused to dispatch a delegation to attend "One Belt, One Road" summit in Beijing.
