Tennessee man: Fugitive inmates surrendered without a word

Trump Visits Hospital Treating Wounded Lawmaker

A pair of inmates from Georgia suspected of killing two corrections officers during their escape from a prisoner bus this week have been captured in Tennessee after a chase that involved gunfire, authorities said.

Rowe and Dubose are accused of killing two Georgia prison guards on a bus before fleeing in a stolen truck earlier this week, prompting a massive manhunt.

During the almost three minute call, a man, who along with his wife had been taken hostage, had just broken free after being held captive by Donnie Rowe and Ricky Dubose.

"I can not tell you how grateful I was to see them arrive", Hale said.

Reports that a home owner held the escaped convicts at gun point are incorrect.

In Georgia, Sills told reporters no one was wounded and the inmates gave up after about 15 minutes in the trees beside Interstate 24. The man held the two at gunpoint with a neighbor he called for help until the sheriff's department could get there to arrest the fugitives.

Law enforcement officials earlier captured Donnie Rowe and Ricky Dubose, two escaped inmates wanted in the slayings of two Georgia prison guards.

"I prayed like I have never prayed before", Hale said.

Hale, 35, said he received a warning call from a friend and quickly loaded every weapon in his home as a precaution before seeing the fugitives crossing a barb wire fence about 300 yards away.

The capture put an end to a multistate manhunt that lasted almost 60 hours after the inmates escaped Tuesday morning in central Georgia.

Rowe and Dubose attempted to steal a auto from the home when the homeowner heard the noise, walked outside, and caught them. Both are being sought by law enforcement.

Deputies spotted the vehicle and chased it for 20 miles (32 kilometers) at high-speed, Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Bill Miller said.

Rutherford County Sheriff Michael Fitzhugh said the suspects fired shots, striking several cruisers, but his deputies weren't hit and didn't return fire to avoid endangering other motorists.

The inmates had run through the woods to a home on Pruitt Road, near the rural community of Christiana.

"Maybe a lot of people are getting a reward out of this", Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn told reporters.

Hours before their capture, Putnam County, Georgia, Sheriff Howard Sills said the public was in "grave danger" and that authorities did not know where the unsafe inmates were. One of them fatally shot both guards, and then they jumped out of the bus and carjacked a driver who happened to pull up behind them on a state Highway 16 in Putnam County, southeast of Atlanta, authorities said.

The pair had been cellmates once and both were serving prison sentences for separate armed robbery and assault convictions at Baldwin State Prison near Milledgeville. They left that truck in Tennessee and stole a white sedan, which they abandoned near the hostages' home, Swing said.

"They will be brought to justice swiftly for their heinous crime against our officers", Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Greg Dozier said in a news release.
