Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn in TV showdown

British Prime Minister Theresa May's gamble on a snap election was under question yesterday after the latest opinion polls showed her Conservative Party's lead was dwindling further just a week before voting begins.

Mrs May was confronted by voters on issues of trust and cuts to welfare under the Conservatives, while Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was pressed over his refusal to say if he would use the UK's nuclear weapons, even in retaliation to an attack.

Mr Corbyn was challenged about his approach to Brexit and said the United Kingdom would not "necessarily" be poorer as a result of leaving the European Union.

May defended herself, saying: "I could have stayed on doing that job for another couple of years and not called an election", May told the BBC audience in York, northern England. "I had the balls to call an election".

Appearing on BBC's Question time, the Labour leader was asked how he would react if Britain was under imminent threat from nuclear weapons.

Pollsters, who universally got it wrong at the last election in 2015, showed support for May and the Conservatives falling after she was forced to backtrack on one of her most striking election pledges to make elderly people pay more for their social care, which opponents dubbed a "dementia tax".

The Prime Minister replied: "No it's not, sir".

On Good Morning Wales, the First Minister Carwyn Jones said Jeremy Corbyn could achieve this by turning up and being fleet of foot.

"We are fighting this election to win and we are mounting a fantastic campaign in order to get that message across of how different our society and our politics could be", he said.

"It's not going to happen quickly, it's not going to happen easily, but we have to have that wish".

Mrs May refused to give a figure for how much she would be willing to pay the European Union in Brexit "divorce" settlement, and she was also challenged over a U-turn on controversial social care plans for England, which saw an as-yet unknown cap added to elderly care costs.

Mr Corbyn was pressed by the audience over whether he would pursue a coalition deal with the SNP in the event of a hung parliament and the Labour leader insisted there would be "no deals".

The Labour leader was challenged over his party's track record on anti-semitism under his leadership.

The online poll of 1,049 people was carried out on June 3.
