Trump says he is being investigated over Comey firing

Robert Mueller, special counsel for the inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, has not yet made a decision to investigate President Donald Trump for obstruction of justice, ABC's senior justice correspondent Pierre Thomas reports.

Mr Trump was not under investigation before Mr Comey's firing, but reportedly is now facing scrutiny for obstruction of justice over the circumstances surrounding the ex-FBI chief's sacking, according to USA media. Rosenstein also approved the appointment of Mueller as special counsel after the recusal of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

"Witch hunt' is how Trump characterises the probe into Russia's election interference and possible ties to his campaign associates".

"In order to try to attempt to raise a legitimate scenario to fire Mueller, Trump has to discredit him", attorney Jeffrey Jacobovitz, who represented some Clinton-era White House officials, told the Post.

Special counsel Mueller - a respected former Federal Bureau of Investigation director - was also bringing in legal firepower to investigate whether there was collusion between Trump's team and Russian Federation to fix the 2016 election or an attempted cover-up.

U.S. intelligence agencies concluded in January that Russian Federation interfered in the presidential race to try to help Mr Trump win, in part by hacking and releasing emails damaging to his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Trump's tweet deepens the potential conflict by asserting that Comey's firing was Rosenstein's idea, Feldman says. White House officials had no case ready for the dismissal of Comey and received heavy criticism for the conflicting explanations about his departure.

Before Trump took to Twitter on Friday, Rosenstein on Thursday issued a perplexing statement of his own, denouncing news stories based on anonymous sources. The probe has reportedly expanded to include whether Trump fired Comey in an attempt to obstruct justice. "Witch Hunt", the president wrote in his tweet. But Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said he wants his panel to probe obstruction of justice.

"I don't believe it's going to happen", said Rubio on CNN's "State of the Union".

After all, fired FBI Director James Comey pretty much telegraphed that during his congressional testimony last week.

On Thursday, Trump appeared to criticize Mueller on Twitter saying the Russian Federation investigation being "led by some very bad and conflicted people".

Rosenstein earlier this month confirmed he had the ultimate authority to hire or fire Mueller, but said he has been given a wide berth to conduct the probe.
