United Nations chief urges action on climate change as Trump debates

Rajoy and Modi agreed to boost bilateral cooperation in the field of combatting climate change.

Nancy Pelosi, one of the top Democrats in Congress, described the apparent decision as a "stunning abdication of American leadership and a grave threat to our planet's future".

Cohn, the Trump economic adviser, also said last week that the president's views were "evolving".

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump said Thursday he was withdrawing the USA from the Paris climate agreement, striking a major blow to worldwide efforts to combat climate change and distancing the country from many allies overseas.

Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of Tesla, SpaceX, and PayPal, tweeted on Wednesday that he has done all he can to influence Trump's decision and if the Orangeman did not listen he would give up on advising him any further.

According to the agreement, a party that has fully joined the accord, as the United States has, can not formally withdraw for three years after the date of joining - and that is then capped by an extra year-long waiting period.

Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila (JOO'-hah SEE'-pah-lah) says climate change won't be reversed "by closing your eyes".

"If this is true, it is a big setback".

Two sources told Fox News that he is expected to pull the USA out of the deal.

Gutteres never mentioned the American leader by name in his speech at New York University's Stern School of Business, his first major address on climate change since taking the reins of the United Nations on January 1.

"Many times I've made the argument that climate action actually creates jobs and creates growth, which is what the United States want, what Canada wants - it's what every country wants", she said.

It also aims to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change and calls for scaled up financial flows, a new technology framework and an enhanced capacity-building framework to support action by developing countries and the most vulnerable countries in line with their own national objectives.

Responding to questions, he said: "We believe that it would be important for the U.S. not to leave the Paris agreement".

But Cohn, Trump's chief White House economic adviser, told reporters during the trip overseas that the president's views on climate change were "evolving" following the discussions with European leaders.

Trump on Wednesday declared that abandoning the Paris climate agreement would be a victory for the American economy.

Jean-Claude Juncker said that "the Americans can't just get out of the agreement", adding that "it takes three to four years" to pull out.

White House aides have been divided on the question of staying or leaving the accord and had been deliberating on "caveats in the language" as late as Wednesday, one official said.

"I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days".

The rift between Donald Trump and the rest of the world promises to deepen and widen, as the United States president decides to go completely against the environment.

World leaders pledged Thursday to keep up the fight against global warming and urged Donald Trump to be part of that effort, hours before the US president was due to announce whether he would pull out of the Paris climate accord.

McKenna says the Canadian government remains committed to the Paris Accord amid.

On Twitter, Trump teased the announcement of his decision as imminent this week.

More than 190 nations agreed to the accord in December 2015 in Paris, and 147 have since formally ratified or otherwise joined it, including the United States - representing more than 80 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.

World leaders repeatedly pressed Trump on the issue during his recent trip to Europe, as did Pope Francis, who gave the president his papal encyclical on climate change when they met in the Vatican.
