US, CentAm officials meet as Trump signals shift

The Foreign Secretary of Mexico Luis Videgaray left Secretary of State Rex Tillerson center and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly right meet during a conference on Prosperity and Security in Central America Thursday

Pence, who will be joined by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, is expected to speak around noon at the Conference on Prosperity and Security in Central America - an event taking place on the campus of Florida International University.

Pence's office confirmed Thursday that he retained Richard Cullen, chairman of McGuireWoods LLP, to assist him in responding to inquiries by special counsel Robert Mueller.

The obstruction of justice investigation into Trump began days after Comey was sacked on May 9, according to people familiar with the matter, the Washington Post said.

US Vice President Mike Pence has hired outside legal counsel to help with questions from investigators probing alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign, a spokesman said on Thursday.

Aides said the vice president had considered several candidates before settling on Cullen and made his final decision earlier this week.

Cullen is no stranger to high-profile federal investigations.

President Trump, who has dismissed the investigations as a "witch hunt", has already retained his own attorney, Marc Kasowitz.

The probe, which began previous year as an investigation into Moscow's meddling in the presidential election, has since widened to include prospective money laundering by Trump associates and the possibility that people close to the President were in contact with Russian operatives throughout the campaign. Former FBI Director James Comey told Congress last week he believes he was sacked by Trump to undermine the agency's Russian Federation probe.

The Washington Post first reported Pence was hiring counsel.
