What happened in Bill Cosby's sexual-assault trial

"I don't know what that means", Constand said.

During one exchange, Cosby lawyer Angela Agrusa suggested that Constand once enjoyed a romantic dinner at Cosby's home before the alleged assault.

Montgomery County Deputy D.A. Kristen Feden highlighted Constand's phone record pattern of calling her own cell number, which indicated checking her voicemail, then placing a call to Cosby, then a member on Temple University's Board of Trustees.

Because the case lacks forensic evidence - and Cosby is not expected to take the stand - the verdict rests largely on the jury's interpretation of his accuser's testimony.

Constand acknowledged that she had initially told police that the incident had occurred in mid-March, while during her testimony Tuesday, she said it had happened sometime in approximately January 2004.

Andrea Constand told the court the comedian gave her pills that left her "frozen" and unable to resist as he sexually assaulted her on his couch.

Beginning Tuesday, Agrusa also painstakingly reviewed Constand's phone records and police statements, hoping to show she changed her mind about the date of the alleged assault and gave authorities an incomplete picture of her friendship with the TV star. The 79-year-old entertainer, once known as "America's dad" for his role in the 1980s television series "The Cosby Show", has denied all wrongdoing. Those statements included Constand's claim that she had never been alone with Cosby before. Why she kept contacting Cosby after the encounter?

"So you were coming to meet the man who had assaulted you, and you were bringing him bath salts?" asked Agrusa.

Soon after, Constand continued, she felt woozy, that she was seeing double and began slurring her speech. She said she first thought it was after a group dinner in March and later realized it happened after a private dinner a month or two earlier.

Constand also testified that the comedian had touched her inappropriately prior to that night, telling the court that he "commented on my trousers and touched the side of my waist and took his hand and attempted to unbutton my button..."

Constand was calm, direct and polite under cross-examination, even when Agrusa's questioning grew pointed and accusatory.

Defense lawyer Brian McMonagle laughs during a break on the third day of actor and comedian Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial in at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania, U.S., June 7, 2017.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. - Bill Cosby's lawyers sought on Wednesday at his criminal trial to portray the woman accusing him of a 2004 sexual assault as an opportunist who pursued the comedian's affections before going after his money.

But Constand said Wednesday she was merely returning his messages. Constand was an employee of Temple University's women's basketball team when the assault allegedly occurred.

"She continued to do her job", Constand's lawyer, Dolores Troiani, said outside court.

Asked why she visited Cosby again after that initial incident, Constand replied, "I wasn't scared of someone making a pass at me or an advance at me".

Some 60 women have come forward to say Cosby sexually violated them, all but destroying his nice-guy image, but the statute of limitations for prosecution had run out in almost every case.

Allred's phone made noise Wednesday afternoon as a Cosby defence lawyer questioned chief accuser Andrea Constand.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are sexual assault victims unless they grant permission, which Constand has done.
