Charlie Gard's future should be decided by doctors, Boris Johnson says

Charlie Gard: US hospital 'offers free treatment' to terminally ill baby after Donald Trump intervenes

Mrs May said: "I'm sure the thoughts of all Members of the House are with the family and Charlie at this exceptionally hard time".

She has given her backing to doctors at the world-famous children's hospital who are not able to move the youngster after courts in the United Kingdom and Europe ruled his life support should be switched off.

That was because Charlie was being treated at a hospital, Great Ormond Street in London, "which has huge expertise in mitochondrial disease".

While Charlie's life support was to be disconnected on June 30, Connie Yates announced on Facebook that the hospital authorities had agreed to allow the parents to have a little more time with their son.

In a statement, the Vatican's Bambino Gesù Hospital says it would like Gard transferred to their facility.

"We know that the case is desperate and that, until now, there are no effective therapies", the hospital statement said.

Connie Yates, Charlie's mother, has been in contact with Enoc, according to CNN.

Charlie's parents want Charlie, who has a form of mitochondrial disease, a genetic condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and brain damage, to have treatment in the US.

Boris Johnson has insisted that Charlie Gard's future should be decided by "expert medical opinion" and supported by the courts. Charlie's parents have used a crowdfunding website to raise the money needed to pay for his treatment in the U.S. Instead, it revolves around an ethical debate about what's best for the child.

But the U.K.'s top death panel has been affirmed by the so-called "European Court of Human Rights", which is apparently some kind of worldwide death panel that convenes in Strasbourg, France, but reserves the right to sentence children everywhere to die.

On Sunday, the Vatican also released a statement saying that the Pope was following the case of the sick child, "with affection and sadness" and was close to his parents: "For this he prays that their wish to accompany and treat their child until the end isn't neglected".

Charlie's dad and mom care for him and treat him lovingly and have raised the funds needed to bring their son to the United States for an experimental cure.

The Pope tweeted out his support for the child, as did President Trump.

Eleven-month-old Charlie Gard has irreversible brain damage and can not see, hear, move or even cry, doctors say.

Lord Winston told ITV's Good Morning Britain courts and doctors should not be interfering with the parents' wishes, saying the loss of a child was "about the worst injury that any person can have". The court also refused to allow them to take Charlie home to die.

Even the Vatican had difficulty with Charlie's case, as was clear in the conflicting messages that at first came from the Holy See.
