Google Mobile App Gets More Personal and Relevant

Last December, Google updated its mobile search app to offer location-based news, sports and weather reports, but today it's introducing a major update that will make the feed a more personalised, Facebook-esque platform.

The new feed experience is available in the Google app for Android and iOS today (July 19) in the USA and internationally "in the next couple of weeks". This new warning will appear before the app is able to ask for permission to access user data, and will replace the current "error" page that web app developers now see.

Effectively replacing Google Now, much of the feed is taken up by news stories related to what you generally search for and read online.

Yet some new bells and whistles - information from local trends and an ability to "follow" public figures, for instance - give Google's search feed a similar feel to the algorithmic stream of the news feed of fellow FANG stock Facebook (FB).

From now on, various search topics like popular movies, tv shows, music videos, artists, etc. would carry a "Follow" button. The search giant is rolling out an update to its Google app for Android and iPhones that will utilize AI to show the content it believes you want to see.

By following specific topics, the Google app will now be able to keep delivering updates and stories that are relevant to what users want to see on their feed. However, these are set up to send alerts via email, instead of this, which places news related to the search query directly into the Google Search App's feed. For us, the feed was dominated by consumer technology news, plus some of the larger political stories of the day.

Years ago, Google built a social network separate from its prized asset, web search.

What do you think about these new phishing protections?

Meet the Google Feed.

A Google product manager said the feed is trained to stay away from "sensitive topics" like suicide, illness, or pornography. Google declined to provide information on how many people use the Google app.

Google has begun verifying the apps registered with them to ensure safety. Google says these new pages will include "hand-selected" apps and games from the Google Play editors.

For example, if you book a flight to Hong Kong through Google Flights, the updated feed may start showing you interesting things to do in the area.

You'll also now be able to follow topics directly from Search results. The rabbit hole is deep, but Google says the basic and most essential info about any topic will remain pinned as a brief snippet card at the very top of the feed.
