Reports indicate that there has been a shooting at a New York City-area hospital.

The New York City mayor tweeted saying he was aware of the situation.

Shots rang out on the 16th floor of Bronx Lebanon Hospital in Morris Heights about 2:45 p.m.

According to an official who spoke to the AP news agency, the gunman was wearing a lab coat with a rifle concealed inside it.

A hospital staffer told NBC4 that the hospital is under lockdown and NYPD vehicles have blocked streets surrounding the facility.

"Active shooting in Bronx Leb".

At least four to six people were injured in the shooting.

Aerial footage of the scene showed the hospital surrounded by police cars and fire trucks. Police said there could be more victims but they are now searching the area floor by floor. Police could be seen on the roof of the building, at one point, with their guns drawn.

The shooter is now dead, according to NY police. It was not immediately clear whether police were looking for any other suspects.
