India 'misleading the public' on Sikkim standoff: China

Though no bilateral fixed, Narendra Modi, Xi Jinping will meet at BRICS event in Hamburg

"And there is no dispute between the two countries that Doklam belongs to China", he stated.

Gen Shuang, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, on Wednesday said India is violating worldwide law and the 1954 Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, or Panchsheel Treaty, that serves as the basis of China and India's relations.

His comments came after weeks of sabre-rattling in New Delhi and Beijing, as officials from both sides talk up a potential clash even bloodier than their 1962 war that left thousands dead. Under Chinese leader Xi Jinping, China has been more assertive in insisting neighbours accept Beijing's "zone of influence".

China claims about 90,000 square kilometers (35,000 square miles) in the Indian province of Arunachal Pradesh, referred to informally by some Chinese as "Southern Tibet".

Citing the Panchsheel, he said: "And as we all know, China, India and Myanmar in the 1950s jointly proposed five principles of peaceful coexistence".

More than a dozen rounds of talks have failed to make substantial progress in the dispute, although there have been relatively few confrontations in recent years.

Initially named Look East, India upped its involvement in Southeast Asia when it unveiled the Act East policy, an effort to foster extensive economic and strategic relations with Asean and strengthen its standing as a regional power to counterbalance China's ever-expanding largesse and influence.

China Wednesday accused India of "misleading the public" by saying that Chinese troops are building a road close to the Chicken's Neck in the Sikkim sector which could endanger India's access to the north- eastern states.

Following the face-off, China last week suspended the pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet where Indians travel via the Nathu La Pass, which has been shut.

In an editorial, the Chinese Communist Party-run newspaper said China will inflict greater losses on India than in the 1962 war if New Delhi incited military conflict. "China is trying its best to use historical lessons to reason with India and show sincerity in peacefully solving the problem, but if India refuses to listen, then China would have no other choice than to use a military way of solving the problem", Hu Zhiyong, a research fellow at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, told the state-run Global Times. "We believe the Chinese People's Liberation Army is powerful enough to expel Indian troops out of Chinese territory".

"Perhaps its defeat in that war was too humiliating for some in the Indian military and that is why they are talking belligerently this time", China Daily said. Although China and Bhutan have spent decades negotiating the precise border without serious incident, the tiny Himalayan kingdom sought help this time from its long-time ally, India, which sent troops onto the plateau. Bhutan has opposed it, and says the ownership of Doklam is yet to be decided. But he said he was "baffled" as to why the dispute flared up now.
