Outrage as BBC Forced to Reveal Salaries of Highest Paid 'Stars'

When the corporation publishes the salaries of its top stars it will reveal the pay packets of figures such as Fiona Bruce Laura Kuenssberg and John Humphrys

"But ... comparing people's pay is not straightforward", Hall said.

BBC presenters' six-figure salaries have been published, exposing a stark gender pay gap, with the top-earning woman on £1.5 million less than the highest-paid man.

Gary Lineker earned at least £1.75 million past year while Sue Barker, the highest earning female sports presenter at the was paid £349,999 at most. Evans reportedly takes in between 2,200,000 pounds ($2,867,920) and 2,249,999 pounds ($2,933,098) per year, which is as much as 1,849,999 pounds ($2,411,658) more than the five people who are tied for 10th make.

"The clear gender inequality where only a third of the top earners are women is also a source of concern".

Lawyers have warned that the BBC could be open to discrimination lawsuits brought by its female employees. "People expect us to have great broadcasters, great presenters, great stars but pay them less than they would get in the market". "We're in a market, and it's a competitive market".

The BBC has not given exact figures for any of the salaries revealed, and has stated that the figures which have been revealed only refer to the amount of licence fee money each person receives and "doesn't include their earnings from other broadcasters or commercial activities".

Among the other well-known names on the list are ex-tennis professional John McEnroe (more than 150,000) and Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi (over 200,000).

He said: "The NUJ represents a vast number of talented, underpaid and badly resourced members within the BBC".

"These figures expose what appears to be a deeply troubling disparity in pay between men and women at one of the UK's most prominent publicly funded institutions, suggesting the pay gap within the BBC may be more significant than feared", she said.

However, the reason for this has been revealed - and it's all down to either their salaries, or the company that they are being paid by.

BBC Director General Lord Hall said he wanted to close the gender pay gap and have equality on screen and radio by 2020, saying that over the last three years almost two-thirds of new people and those promoted on TV and radio were women. "We are a shining example of equality - the women dominate on ITV!".

The BBC has come under fire for the lack of diversity among its highest-paid on-air staff. "This is already having an impact - of the talent on the list that we have hired or promoted in the last four years, 60 percent are women". "Talent salaries and wages will round upwards, they won't go down".

BBC's director general Tony Hall commented on the wage gap in The Guardian, first citing the network's struggle to compete against other entertainment vectors, including streaming television.

"I think it's very important that the lid has been lifted on this pay discrimination in the BBC and that it's been laid bare", she said.
