Parents still fighting for Charlie Gard's treatment

Monday may bring new hope for the parents of terminally-ill British baby Charlie Gard, after the London hospital at the center of the drama chose to seek a new court decision following fresh claims relating to experimental treatment available in the United States.

Charlie's parents had sought to bring him to the United States for experimental treatment but his doctors at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital disagreed, saying it could not save him and was not in his best interest.

It ruled the children's hospital could turn off his life support. The official also said the president wants to be helpful without placing undue pressure on the family.

The decision comes after a team of seven worldwide medical experts alerted the hospital that fresh, unpublished data suggested that an experimental drug could improve Charlie's brain condition.

Alasdair Seton-Marsden, a spokesman for Charlie's parents, said they were "thankful for the outcome of the hearing" and thanked supporters.

"Two worldwide hospitals and their researchers have told us in the last 24 hours that they have new evidence about experimental treatment proposed by them".

"It is an outrage that Great Ormond Street Hospital has denied a pastor from praying for Charlie Gard and offering spiritual help to his family", Mahoney said.

It called for the family to be allowed to travel for the experimental treatment, though a High Court ruling blocked such a move on June 30.

On Monday afternoon, the case returns to the High Court to hear fresh arguments following new information from researchers at the Vatican's children's hospital.

The boy's parents are convinced that an experimental therapy, developed by a USA neurologist, may help their son recover some functions - even though it has never been tested on someone with Charlie's particularly severe form of the disease, known as mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome.

He said seven global experts had supported the treatment the couple wanted Charlie to have. Thank you again for your continued support. "If there is new evidence I will hear it".

However, the treatment has never been used on either mice or humans with the type of mitochondrial disease from which Charlie suffers, according to court documents.

At the end of June, the European Court of Human Rights rejected an appeal by Charlie's parents that he be allowed to undergo the experimental treatment in the United States, following a similar ruling by the UK's supreme court. "They're all getting stronger", Yates said.

Before Monday's hearing, Connie Yates told Sky News that she wanted judges to listen to experts on her son's condition who say the treatment might help.

Mr Armstrong said there was "encouraging" evidence.

The hospital alternatively offered to arrange for the experimental drug to be shipped to Great Ormond Street and advise its staff on administering the drug.

"If we won the court case and we got to America, and then within the first week of treatment he started suffering and he was in pain, we would let him go", he said.
