Two dead in shooting at Israel's embassy in Jordan

"The second, Bashar Hamarneh, a doctor who was in the residential quarter of the embassy at the time of the incident, died of his injuries after midnight in hospital", the security source said.

Tension between Jordan and Israel after embassy shooting.

The head of the Israel Security Agency, or Shin Bet, Nadav Argaman, traveled Monday to Jordan in an effort to diffuse the crisis.

The Jordanian news site Hala Akhbar, which is linked to the kingdom's military, quoted diplomatic and security officials as saying that Jordan refused to let the guard leave without an investigation.

Israel and Jordan are bound by a 1994 peace treaty, one of only two that Israel has with countries in the Arab world. Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and defense officials are working on various channels vis-a-vis the Jordanian government.

The shooting came at a time when Israel and Jordan were conducting intense contacts over an escalating crisis at a contested Jerusalem shrine that is revered by Muslims and Jews.

Jordanian media reported that the area around the embassy was sealed off following reports of gunfire. Israel insisted the guard has diplomatic immunity.

Local media said authorities prevented embassy staff from leaving the premises in order to question them over the incident, reporting the presence of the interior minister at the scene.

Oded Eran, a former Israeli Ambassador to Jordan, told journalists that in the short term security should be stepped up outside the embassy and in the long term Jordan should "tone down their statements on Jeruslem and events at Temple Mount".

Israel installed metal detectors last week and added security cameras Sunday near the entrance of Temple Mount in Old Jerusalem.

The Israeli guard was also injured in the incident, which took place in Jordan's capital Amman on Sunday (23 July) evening.

Israel shut off the mosque compound on 14 July after Arab Israelis attacked and killed two police officers nearby.

Palestinians view the move as Israel asserting further control over the compound, home to Al-Aqsa mosque and Dome of the Rock, and considered Islam's third holiest site. Israeli guards opened fire killing 3 intruders and wounding 16 in the worst violence since Europe-wide protests erupted over the capture of Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdish Workers Party. The decision to keep the embassy closed Monday was made over the weekend, in light of the statements made by Turkish government officials over the tensions on Har HaBayis, the sources said.
