US Declares Iran complying on Nuclear Deal

Iran's Foreign Ministry has denounced the USA move to impose new economic sanctions against Tehran over its ballistic missile program as "cheap and useless", saying Tehran will respond with its own sanctions against the Americans.

The Treasury Department on Tuesday blacklisted 18 individuals and entities for supporting Iran's military and Revolutionary Guards Corps, accusing them of trying to build ballistic missiles and steal USA computer software and of harassing US naval vessels.

Two entities - the IRGC Aerospace Force Self Sufficiency Jihad Organization and the IRGC Research and Self Sufficiency Jehad Organization - were designated by the State Department for contributing to Iran's ballistic missile program.

But senior administration officials made clear that the certification was grudging and said that Trump meant to impose a new round of sanctions against Iran for ongoing "malign activities" in non-nuclear areas such as ballistic missile development and support for terrorism.

Trump's reservations about the nuclear deal held up the White House's announcement on compliance, a USA official said.

Zarif argued the US's failure to build on the foundation of trust created by the Iran nuclear deal suggested "the USA hostility to Iran will not end".

The Trump administration last certified that Iran was in compliance with the nuclear agreement in April.

Trump had criticized the deal - negotiated under his predecessor Barack Obama - previous year during his campaign and called it the "worst deal ever" and vowed to "rip up" the agreement if elected.

The White House is required to notify congress every three months on whether Iran is in compliance with the nuclear agreement. Under its provisions, Iran agreed to curb its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief worth billions of dollars.

However, U.S. President Donald Trump was reportedly not fully on board with certifying Iran's compliance.

The new sanctions, according to the representative of the White House, will be created to counter large-scale expansion of Iran's Armed Forces, as well as its operations in Syria and the Middle East in general.

However, the Trump administration critiqued Iran's non-nuclear activities, saying they are "unquestionably in default of the spirit" of the deal. Despite slamming Obama's agreement with the country as the worst deal ever negotiated, once Trump ascended to the presidency, his rhetoric tempered, and the certifications carried on as usual.

He added, "We will never use them except for self-defense".

Trump vowed to dismantle the historic agreement while he was a candidate, but he's given himself more time to determine whether to follow through on that pledge. If you want to lie about whether Iran has stuck to the deal, then just tweet out the lie and kill the treaty. He also said the accord didn't take into account Iran's role in sponsoring terrorism and destabilizing other countries.

The announcement came alongside a statement by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who accused Iran of funding terrorist groupings, violating human rights and nurturing plans for a ballistic missile program.
