Waqf rejects all new security measures at Temple Mount

Palestinians fear Israel is trying to retake the holy site of al Aqsa by stealth

Jordan's official ties with Israel remain deeply unpopular in the kingdom, which has a large Palestinian population.

However, the Muslim authorities that oversee Al-Aqsa said they would continue to oppose any new Israeli-imposed measures.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the attack as "an act of terror, carried out by a beast who was incited with unfathomable hatred".

Netanyahu yesterday said the planned demolition of the attacker's home would go ahead "as soon as possible".

The 20-year-old Palestinian assailant infiltrated the settlement of Halamish and surprised a family that was celebrating the birth of a new grandchild during their Sabbath dinner Friday night.

On Saturday Israel sent extra troops into the occupied West Bank and its police broke up a crowd of stone-throwing Palestinians in Jerusalem.

The Israeli Foreign Affairs Ministry advised the Israeli president against speaking with Erdoğan in light of the Turkish involvement in the escalating situation but Rivlin made a decision to speak with the Turkish president over the phone. But Muslims alleged Israel was trying to expand its control at the Muslim-administered site and have launched mass prayer protests.

"Security considerations are not the real motive behind the recent Israeli actions in Jerusalem's Old City and the vicinity of Al-Aqsa", he said.

Israeli officials argue that the detectors are needed for security after the gun attack outside the mosque. Police said they were investigating the charge.

The metal detectors were installed a week ago, in response to an attack by Arab gunmen there who killed two Israeli policemen.

Three Palestinians were killed in the clashes with Israeli security forces that ensued, and hundreds were injured.

Abbas called on all Palestinian employees to donate one day's pay to support Jerusalem.

Muslims around the world said the new measures aim to change the status quo - a delicate balance of prayer and visiting rights. We have therefore taken a decisive and firm stance, especially with regard to security coordination. Gilad Erdan, Israel's public security minister, also warned of potential "large-scale volatility".

Fatah called a general strike and three days of mourning in honor of the three dead protesters, who appear to have been killed by Israeli live fire. Al-Abed is hospitalized in Israel after being shot. Initially peaceful protests on Friday descended into large-scale rioting in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

"If we are patient we will surely get what we want and halt these electronic doors and stop these measures and stop the raids of the Israeli government in all the cities of the West Bank".
