Some Venezuela opposition parties to vie in vote

Diplomatic representatives of 12 countries in the Americas and the Caribbean subscribed a text under the title Declaration of Lima, stating that Venezuela "is no longer a democracy" and the fraudulent National Constituent Assembly imposed by the leadership of chavismo is "illegitimate ".

A certain discouragement seemed to win the ranks of the anti-Maduro, after the installation of the Constituent assembly that they have not managed to block.

"It should be clear: We arrived there to help President Nicolas Maduro, but also to create strong bases for the construction of Bolivarian and Chavista socialism", Diosdado Cabello, a leader of the ruling socialist party and member of the new assembly, told a crowd of supporters Monday.

President Nicolás Maduro continued his efforts to shut down opposition to the government when the new constitutional assembly composed exclusively of pro-government delegates convened on Tuesday as well.

On Tuesday, Venezuela's Supreme Court ordered the arrest and 15-month imprisonment of opposition mayor Ramon Muchacho.

Since the disputed election, security forces have stepped up their presence.

They said they would not recognize the Constituent Assembly. "The only thing he wants today is for us to abandon the street".

In the months that followed, clashes erupted between security forces and protestors opposing elections for the so-called Constituent Assembly.

The situation became more acute with the installation of the Constituent Assembly last Friday, given that the body was not recognized by the Venezuelan opposition or by many governments and worldwide organizations.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan authorities say a manhunt is underway after an anti-government paramilitary attack at a military barracks in the northwestern city of Valencia early Sunday.

The assembly was expected to gather at the legislative palace in Caracas for the first time since voting Saturday to remove the nation's outspoken chief prosecutor, a move that drew condemnation from numerous same regional government that are sending representatives to the meeting in Peru's capital.

On Tuesday, the United Nations joined the growing criticism of the government, saying Venezuela had used excessive force to crush anti-government protests.

The new measures announced by the U.S. Treasury Department will freeze the U.S. assets of the targeted individuals, ban them from travel to the United States and prohibit Americans from doing business with them.

Commission members are looking into the latest wave of violent anti-government protests since April, as well as mass rallies during the first months of 2014 protesting the country's high levels of urban violence, inflation, and chronic shortages of basic goods attributed to economic policies.
