Tillerson: Russian election meddling 'created serious mistrust'

Philippines to host international summit with focus on security

The Trump administration is preparing a response to Moscow's demands that the US drastically cut its diplomatic presence in Russia, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters Monday.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson held talks on Sunday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as their two countries dealt with diplomatic tensions that erupted with the claims of Moscow meddling in the 2016 presidential elections.

Explaining his decision in an interview relayed on state television on Sunday, Putin said he ordered the move because he "thought it was the time to show that we're not going to leave that without an answer".

This led to Congress passing fresh USA sanctions against Russian Federation last month that has led to Moscow moving to expel hundreds of US diplomats and seize two USA facilities in Russian Federation.

Russian officials believe the Washington establishment, exploiting the allegations of collusion between Moscow and Trump associates, has stymied the US president from enacting his agenda of improving ties with Russia any time soon.

A North Korean organization linked to the country's ruling party on Tuesday said members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), including China and Russian Federation, would "pay dearly" for their support for the new sanctions, in a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

They are also likely to discuss the timing of the next round of security talks involving the two countries' foreign and defense ministers, which sources familiar with Japan-U.S. relations said earlier are being arranging for around August 17.

Deep differences between the USA and Russian Federation remain, Tillerson said, although he added that the two nations still have important security issues to discuss. Russian Federation and the US should not "just cut everything off on one single issue" like Ukraine, Tillerson said.

Speaking to journalists at a security forum in Manila, Washington's top diplomat said that Kim Jong-Un's regime must halt ballistic missile tests if it wanted to talk to the United States about resolving the standoff.

Russian Federation has denied seeking to sway the U.S. election and Trump has denied any collusion. "I hope that it will not come to a confrontation, and we will work to find ways to minimize damage from what happened".

He also expects to have discussions on additional topics concerning "threats to all of us and our common response to that" as well as "opportunities that exist among all of those to strengthen relationships".

In addition, the USA official revealed that he had warned Lavrov that Washington was deciding on a response to the Kremlin's decision to order a cut in the size of the U.S. mission in Moscow.

07 de agosto de 2017, 15:06Moscow, Aug 7 (Prensa Latina) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov today denounced the tightening of USA sanctions against his country, and assured that such actions will affect bilateral relations for a long time.

The Trump administration named Volker to the position in July. Russian Federation will respond accordingly in the future. And the two countries continue to discuss expanding their limited cease-fire with Jordan in Syria's southwest corner, weeks after it was implemented and which has seen few violations.

That failure is likely to add to Russia's view that the Trump Administration is simply powerless to improve relations even when they want to, and that the pervasive anti-Russia sentiment within the US Congress will likely preclude any real rapprochement for the time being.

"However, North Korean representatives reacted in the same manner to all previously passed resolutions of the UN Security Council". This painful problem must go through together only, concluded Mr Lavrov.

The United States and Russian Federation are feuding, expelling diplomats in what Washington calls a new post-cold war low.
