Fifa to lift the ban on poppies on football shirts

It is understood Gianni Infantino was sympathetic to the FA cause over the poppy controversy

In what must surely rank as one of its most nonsensical decisions, FIFA imposed fines on the four British associations previous year saying the wearing of poppies contravened regulations that that players' equipment should not carry any "political, religious or commercial" slogans.

Fifa is set to lift the ban on the poppy following talks with the football associations of the United Kingdom.

At the time Prime Minister Theresa May told the BBC that Fifa's poppy stance was "utterly outrageous".

Northern Ireland commemorated Armistice Day with black armbands when they played Azerbaijan, while Wales did not opt for a visible commemoration by their team, but were fined as fans wore poppies in the stands, while a card mosaic was raised before their match against Serbia.

The match has not been confirmed but will go ahead unless - as seems unlikely - either side is involved in a play-off to qualify for next year's World Cup.

The FA, SFA and FAW all lodged appeals, with the IFA not joining them only due to there being no right of appeal for fines below a certain threshold.

Wales and Northern Ireland were fined for displaying it in their stadiums.

According to reports, Federation Internationale de Football Association negotiated with the home nations and proposed revised provisions last week which would mean the poppy could be worn as long as the match organisers and each team's opponents agree on its use ahead of a particular fixture.

England captain Wayne Rooney wears a poppy on his sleeve.

In 2016 it began disciplinary proceedings against the Football Association of Ireland over players in a friendly game with Switzerland wearing a logo to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising.

The poppy was worn by English and Scottish players in an global in 2016.

A hastily-arranged conference call next month of IFAB members - the body governing changes to the Laws - is expected to ratify the change in time for a potential commemoration of those that lost their lives in the Great War, as is traditional for England games in November.
