Google Takes Fight Over Record Antitrust Fine to EU Courts

Fine european record: Google filed an action for annulment

The €2.4bn fine against Google for illegally exploiting its 90pc search market share led to its parent company Alphabet's profits falling by 30pc in July.

Google on Monday appealed the record $2.9 billion antitrust fine it got slapped with this summer by European regulators over manipulating its Internet search results.

The EU Court of Justice (ECJ) told a lower tribunal last Wednesday to re-examine USA chip-maker Intel's appeal against a 1.06bn Euro fine, dealing a rare setback to the European Commission.

It gave the company 90 days to comply or face further fines.

The company has submitted plans on how it plans to stop favouring its shopping service and these are now being reviewed by Brussels.

Earlier last week, Europe's anti-trust chief Margrethe Vestager said Google's proposals to comply with the European Union order to modify its shopping service was pointed in the "right direction".

Google has filed a legal appeal against a record-breaking fine handed down by the European Commission this summer for anti-competitive behavior relating to the operation of its product search comparison service, now known as Google Shopping.

At the time of the ruling, Europe's antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager said Google's strategy for attracting customers to its online shopping service was not just about being better than rivals.

Google is now set for a legal showdown in Brussels that could take years to resolve, and add further strain on already tense relations between the company and the EU.
