Longest surviving terrorist killed in Kashmir

Abdul Qayoom Najar killed by security forces in Uri

Authorities on Tuesday have made a decision to snap with immediate effect internet and voice service in Baramalla and Sopore in wake of the killing of Kashmir's longest surviving militant Qayoom Najjar near LoC in Uri area of north Kashmir's Baramulla district.

Imtiyaz Hussain, Baramulla Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), said, "Najar was killed by security forces foiling an infiltration bid in Lachipora area near the LoC on Tuesday morning".

For years Najar, one of the most wanted militants of North Kashmir had kept the police and the army on toes. He was living in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir since 2015. "This killing is very significant".

Lashkar e Islam top commander Qayoom Najar with Rs 10 lakh bounty killed in Uri. "Najar joined the militant ranks again after being released in 1995".

Abdul Qayoom Najar alias Janshab, Abid, Wazeer and Qayoom chacha was the son of Abdul Ahad Najar of Batpora Sopore.

Najar came to the limelight after the attacks on mobile towers in 2016 and killings of six civilians in Sopore and its adjacent villages.

The police recovered arms and ammunition, apart from Pakistan currency notes near Najar's body. Officials say that Najar was also unhappy as the Hizbul high command had shifted their focus to the boys operating in Tral instead of his cadres.

Lashkar e- Islam Chief was a rebel commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, who later formed the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Islam. The feud worsened when Qayoom warned mobile operators in Sopore town to shut down and killed local Hurriyat activist Sheikh Altaf-ur-Rehman. "As they were challenged, militants opened fire triggering a gunfight".
