PH suspends trade with North Korea to comply with United Nations resolution

Americans are a little too relaxed about nukes

The United States called on the U.N. Security Council to vote on increased sanctions against North Korea after its most recent nuclear test.

The move is said to be unlike previous US efforts, in which the USA has spent weeks, and sometimes months, carefully crafting language with China before presenting the resolution to the rest of the Security Council for a vote.

Diplomatic sources said Russian Federation and China opposed the measures as a whole, except for the ban on textiles, during a meeting Friday of experts from the 15 Security Council members.

The diplomats expressed optimism for the US-backed measure, despite Russian Federation and China's reticence.

Professor Joseph DeThomas of Pennsylvania State University tells The Associated Press the U.S. demand is "an indicator of how the administration thinks time has run out".

The proposed raft of sanctions would be the toughest-ever imposed on North Korea and seek to punish Pyongyang for its sixth and largest nuclear test.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who called the nuclear risk in North Korea the most risky crisis in the world today, told reporters Tuesday that "the unity of the Security Council is absolutely crucial".

The US is willing to risk a veto of its proposal rather than see it watered down, according to a Security Council diplomat who asked not to be identified while negotiations are ongoing.

Mexico has given North Korea's ambassador 72 hours to leave the country, though Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray later said it had not broken off diplomatic ties. "We have no leverage. They have produced nothing". "War is never something the Unites States wants - we don't want it now".

The U.S. demand for the Security Council to take swift action was viewed as a clear gauge of how seriously the Trump administration views the situation in North Korea. But he said trying to stop goods and material flowing from China to North Korea without United Nations backing would substitute a U.S.

North Korean state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun said in an editorial on Saturday that Pyongyang was now a nuclear power and praised Kim for his "brilliant achievement" in strengthening "defences to protect the Korean peninsula from invasion".

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley announced that Trump administration and United Nations representatives held a recent emergency council meeting.

The U.S. Mission to the United Nations said it had no comment on the KCNA report, which concluded by saying: "The U.S. administration will have to pay a dear price for her tongue-lashing".
