Three women who worked at Google just sued the company, claiming discrimination

Google Sued by Women Workers Claiming Gender Discrimination

Google is facing a lawsuit from three of its former female employees who accuse the search engine company of discrimination with regards to pay and promotions.

The case is Ellis v. Google Inc., CGC-17-561299, California Superior Court, San Francisco County.

"While Google has been an industry-leading tech innovator, its treatment of female employees has not entered the 21st century", the plaintiffs' lawyer Kelly Dermody said.

Google denied the claim that the company paid women less for similar jobs than men and didn't offer women enough opportunities for promotion. Coincidently, the U.S. Department of Labor is also in the midst of its own investigation into whether or not Google discriminates against women, Reuters noted. "Google has always sought to be a great employer, for every one of our employees", said Gina Scigliano, a spokesperson for the company.

The plaintiffs were a software engineer, a communications worker and a manager. Google originally supported the Department of Labor's efforts, but as the department requested more information, the company stopped cooperating. Despite four years of experience, she was hired as a Level 3 engineer - a level reserved for recent college graduates.

In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, Ellis said the gender pay gap is a deeply ingrained problem at Google, and while "lip service" has been paid by companies that claim to be committed to combating pay disparities, the problem "hasn't really changed".

Google also vehemently denied the content of Wipper's testimony, saying it performs annual audits related to pay equity and found no pay gap.

Due to the extensive records that Google is required to keep regarding pay, job classifications, and other employment records, the plaintiffs hold that although it now does nothing to fix the situation, the company should be well aware the discrimination occurring. Several male employees who were less qualified than her or at the same level were promoted before her.

None of the plaintiffs are now employed by Google. Ellis also claimed that weeks after her appointment, a male colleague with the similar amount of experience was hired into Level 4 by the company.

Ellis said, "I have come forward to correct a pervasive problem of gender bias at Google".

The lawsuit, filed in a San Francisco court, says that Google discriminates against female staff with lower pay, more limited promotion, and fewer advancement opportunities compared to men with comparable qualifications.
