Celebs Slam Trump for His Response to San Juan Mayor's Plea

Rubio urges Trump to put Pentagon in charge of recovery in Puerto Rico

The mayor of San German, a town of about 35,000, echoed Cruz's harsh words.

"The military and first responders, despite no electric, roads, phones etc., have done an wonderful job".

President Trump drew the ire of Hollywood after launching a Twitter attack on San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz Saturday. "We want them to be safe and sound and secure and we will be there every day until that happens".

"Mr. Trump, I beg you to take charge and save lives", she said.

"I am done being polite. We are dying here". Trump's latest missive could further inflame sentiment after he had earlier weighed in on the emerging fight over how to finance the already debt-stricken territory's recovery - comments that were viewed as premature and distasteful by some.

To say that this has been a bad week for hurricane-stricken Puerto Rico would be a grandiose understatement.

Maria made landfall as a major Category 4 hurricane in Puerto Rico on September 20, killing at least 16 people, knocking out power, decimating infrastructure and drowning the island's agriculture.

"It's a love letter to Puerto Rico", he said. "This is a people are dying story". "Fake News CNN and NBC are going out of their way to disparage our great First Responders as a way to 'get Trump.' Not fair to FR or effort!"

The mayor retorted: "This is, damn it, this is not a good news story".

Trump is scheduled to speak to the governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rossello, by telephone on Saturday.

He said the Trump administration had focused more on making a good impression on members of the media gathered at San Juan's convention center than bringing aid to rural Puerto Rico.

Some lawmakers have been critical of the speed and scope of the response, especially considering warnings that the island, populated with over 3 million federal taxpaying conditional US citizens, would take a direct hit from the storm.

"Puerto Rico was totally destroyed".

Trump lashed out at Cruz in tweets early Saturday, claiming she was being influenced by Democrats to "be nasty to Trump".

However, outside San Juan, people said the comments from U.S. officialdom were far from the truth.

"There's nothing left. It's been wiped out", Trump said during a Friday morning speech to the National Association of Manufacturers.
