October Proclaimed Breast Cancer Awareness Month by County Commissioners

"Of course, some of that is genetic, but three out of four women who develop breast cancer have no family history of the disease", explained Crestwood Women's Center Breast Care Manager, Julie McCain.

During the month of October, Brown's Car Stores and owner William E. Schuiling, will donate a portion of the proceeds from every vehicle sold to local Susan G. Komen affiliates and the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation.

"Many women are offered mammogram screening when they are middle-aged, but if we know a woman has genetic markers that place her at higher risk of breast cancer, we can recommend more intensive screening at a younger age", says Chenevix-Trench.

Scientists now believe a simple blood test could identify women at greater risk to establish much earlier diagnosis.

Researchers from Quebec city are now hoping to obtain the necessary financing to assess the feasibility and acceptability of this new method of assessing the risk of breast cancer. Now, we have access to more accurate mammograms, such as the Genius 3D Mammography exam, that detects more invasive cancers, reduces false positives and is clinically proven as superior for women of all ages - even those with dense breasts compared to traditional 2D mammography.

The additions almost double the number of genetic markers known to scientists, providing a trove of data for future studies to investigate in search of better understanding, new detection methods, and potentially more effective treatments.

Mutations in these genes prevent them from repairing changes in other sections of DNA in breast tissue, raising the risk of further mutation.

The National Cancer Institute says only 1% of males can get breast cancer, one of these men is Cecil Herrin.

Most of the variants found by OncoArray were not found within genes, but rather within regions of the genome that regulate the activity of nearby genes.

The findings are published today in the journals Nature and Nature Genetics.

For the breast cancer study, researchers examined the tissue of 78 patients who underwent mastectomies related to breast cancer. "This should provide guidance for a lot of future research".

"About eight out of nine women with breast cancer don't have a family history, so such a test would not help most women", she said.

Others, known as oestrogen-receptor negative, are not affected by the hormone and are more hard to treat.

"However, we do not always find the mutation in the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 among many of these women and their habits of life do not seem to be problematic". "A better understanding of the biological basis of oestrogen receptor negative breast cancer may lead to more effective preventive interventions and treatments".

'Crucially, the discovery of 10 new genetic variants that predispose women to ER-negative (oestrogen receptor negative) breast cancer could be particularly important'.

Baroness Delyth Morgan, chief executive of the charity Breast Cancer Now, said: 'This is another exciting step forward in our understanding of the genetic causes of breast cancer.
