Haitian TPS Program Will End in July 2019

She works with many Haitians who have Temporary Protected Status in the USA - which President Donald Trump's administration announced this week that it plans to rescind in 2019.

TPS holders, who include a relatively small number of Africans in addition to Central Americans and Haitians, "have more than 270,000 US -born children", she said in a statement, "and thousands of grandchildren".

The move to terminate TPS for Haitians comes after a similar step was taken against 5,000 Nicaraguans.

Haitians received TPS in 2010 after a 7.0-magnitude quake shook the country, killing 220,000 people.

A number of advocacy groups, members of Congress, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce had been urging a further extension based on ongoing problems from the devastating 2010 natural disaster and Haiti's limited capacity to reabsorb these nationals and family members.

The Department of Homeland Security had considered ending TPS for Haitians in May.

Clarke says that rebuilding in Haiti is supported by remittances from the Haitian community in the United States, and that "these remittances are critical to the recovery, and have provided for basic needs, including education, agricultural restoration, business development, and home reconstruction".

However, the decision has been criticized by Haitian advocates who say that living conditions in Haiti have not improved almost enough for Haitians to be deported from the U.S.

Monday's announcement comports with a broader administration effort to restrict immigration to the United States and increase efforts to expel those who have no permanent legal status. We must remain committed to those principles and stand with our neighbors in Haiti as they tackle their challenges. Countries can gain TPS status due to an armed conflict, environmental disaster, epidemic or other temporary condition.

"We are at a critical juncture in the fight to get Temporary Protected Status extended for our immigrant communities", said Haitian Council Member Mathieu Eugene.

Successive administrations have regularly renewed their status, and many have USA -born children. "We have 18 months to continue to mobilize, to continue to organize, to make the case to our government", Forry said. They work. They pay every tax except the federal income tax.

To allow for an orderly transition, the effective date of the termination of TPS for Haiti will be delayed 18 months. "With this decision, Trump is tearing families apart and turning his back on the values that have made our country great". While Hurricane Irma largely skirted Haiti this year, it hit southern Florida hardest, which is home to thousands of Haitian TPS recipients.

The Haitians are among more than 300,000 foreigners, the majority of them illegal arrivals from Central America, living here under TPS. After the United Nations diminished its presence in the country last month, it is more important than ever that the United States support worldwide efforts to enhance and maintain security in Haiti and build up its capacity for ensuring the country's security.

"Besides the human toll on Haitian TPS recipients and their families, it will be costly for their employers, ruinous to the up and coming neighborhoods where they often live, and destablilizing to their countries of origin", Saenz said.
