Team effort needed to fight violence vs women: Legarda

UN Women

The day of recognition kicks off a 16-day United Nations campaign against gender-based violence, which ends on Human Rights Day Dec. 10. We need to remind ourselves that these issues. are real in our region too; countless women and girls of all diversities are subjected to comments and behaviours on a daily basis that are not only disrespectful, but also prevent them from fulfilling their academic and professional aspirations. The crimes include intimate partner violence, sexual violence and harassment, human trafficking, female genital mutilation and child marriage. To achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, more vigorous efforts are required, including legal frameworks, to counter deeply rooted gender-based discrimination that often results from patriarchal attitudes and related social norms.

Insp. Gord Friesen of the Winnipeg police said gender-based violence accounts for the largest volume of calls to the police service. In 2012, nearly half of all women who were victims of intentional homicide worldwide were killed by an intimate partner or family member, compared to six percent of male victims.

If these statistics don't spur you to take action against violence against women, then one can only wonder what will. This shows violence against women increased in Punjab this year, she said. "Together, we must challenge the prejudices and inequalities that allow this violence to persist".

PCSW Chairperson Fauzia Viqar and the Lahore Division commissioner stated at a joint press conference, "As a nation we must fight to end discrimination against women and ensure that women are protected adequately".

The research, released Friday, said violence against health-care workers is pervasive within the walls of hospitals across Ontario.

This year's 16 Days theme, 'Leave No One Behind, ' reflects the importance of the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, which commits to eliminating all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres. UNiTE is another initiative that seeks to end violence against women.

The 16 days of activism encompass other significant dates: International Women Human Rights Defenders Day on November 29, World AIDS Day on December 1, and December 6: The National Day of Action and Remembrance on Violence Against Women, which commemorates the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre at l'École Polytechnique in 1989.
