Exactly One Year After Donald Trump Became President, the Government Shuts Down

This legislation would likely be dead on arrival in the Senate, where Democrats have said they have enough votes to block the legislation.

However, only 50 of the required 60 senators voted in favour of the bill - with a majority of Democrats and five Republicans voting against.

Trump's and Pence's statements closely match the messaging from congressional Republicans who, in a branding effort, are naming the shutdown after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer: the Schumer Shutdown.

If the government shuts down, federal workers would not be paid, and tasks deemed "non-essential" would not be carried out.

But essential services will still run.

The government shut down Friday night in a chaotic close to Donald Trump's first year as president.

In President Trump's view, "that is why we need to win more Republicans" in the mid-term elections.

White House Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney speaks during a briefing on a possible government shutdown at the White House in Washington D.C. January 19, 2018.

Although Trump was personally involved in the negotiations with the Democrats to secure the funds needed to keep his government functioning, it did not reap any results.

The GOP has also lashed out at the rivaling party, with Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell saying that the shutdown had been "100-percent avoidable" but was filibustered by Democrats over a "completely unrelated" measure on illegal immigration, which sought to shield immigrant children from deportation. In the early afternoon the United States president hosted the Democrat's top senator, Chuck Schumer, to a meeting in the White House. He said Democrats would be fine with backing some type of short term continuing resolution. "We do not want a shutdown".

The shutdown formally began on Saturday, the first anniversary of President Donald Trump's inauguration. On immigration, President Trump said he'd accept whatever deal lawmakers reached, but then shot down a bipartisan proposal.

Republicans are claiming that Democrats are holding the government hostage over demands to protect 700,000 "dreamer" immigrants brought to the country as children and now living in the USA illegally.

The White House's press secretary Sarah Sanders meanwhile, said Senate Democrats had "put politics above our national security, military families, vulnerable children, and our country's ability to serve all Americans".

A Senate Democratic source said that was still too far out.
