Male infertility among many side effects linked to ibuprofen

People using ibuprofen for long term pain relief could suffer muscle loss lower libido and depression according to a new study

Now, before you panic, there's no suggestion yet that occasionally relying on an ibuprofen will make your balls shrivel up and die.

"Our immediate concern is for the fertility of men who use these drugs for a long time", said David Møbjerg Kristensen at the University of Copenhagen.

'Ibuprofen appears to be the preferred pharmaceutical analgesic for long-term chronic pain and arthritis.

The researchers found that, compared with the placebo group, the men who took ibuprofen experienced a 23 percent increase in levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) - a hormone that's secreted by the pituitary gland and stimulates the production of testosterone - after two weeks.

The condition is normally seen in older men and smokers, and is caused by the body having to boost testosterone levels because normal production in the testes is insufficient.

Aspirin, the best-selling NSAID on the USA market, was initially linked to stomach problems but was thought to be otherwise safe.

The decreased ratio of testosterone to LH created a hormonal imbalance called "compensated hypogonadism" in the endocrine system, which regulates and controls hormones.

As it relieves pain, ibuprofen may also diminish male fertility, according to a small but compelling new study.

Ibuprofen subjects were given 600 mg twice a day, or the equivalent of three pills. (In culture, there are no cells to produce luteinizing hormone to compensate.) The researchers found that a number of genes involved in steroid synthesis were affected by ibuprofen. Professional athletes, however, do tend to take ibuprofen frequently, so this research could spark a serious look into the way those under physical strain treat their aches and pains.

This resulted in hypogonadism, which is associated with infertility and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases like stroke and heart failure.

The research, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, showed that the men who took the high doses of ibuprofen developed the disorder known as compensated hypogonadism. He said that the safety of Ibuprofen has been proven by decades of study and real-world use.

"Long-term use of ibuprofen has other negative effects on overall health so people should only be taking it over a period of weeks, months or years if a doctor has prescribed it".

The disorder was mild and temporary in the clinical volunteers, researchers told The Guardian newspaper in the United Kingdom.
