Mystery around USA military's secret satellite launch by SpaceX deepens

SpaceX president confirms successful launch of government spy satellite Zuma

SpaceX now targets 5 10 p.m. Saturday for its Falcon Heavy test fire, according to News 6 partner Florida Today.

Falcon Heavy will officially become the most powerful operational rocket in the world when it lifts off from the historic pad with more than 5.1 million pounds of thrust. The most likely culprit for the failed launch of the payload can be an American Corporation Northrop Grumman.

Iridium is one of SpaceX's largest commercial satellite customers, with four launches in the past 12 months from Vandenberg Air Force Base on California's central coast and four upcoming launches listed on SpaceX's manifest.

The target satellite is aimed to fly on the SpaceX Falcon 9 spacecraft, which arrived at the Cape Canaveral as of planned liftoff on January 30 from pad 40 on the old SpaceX booster.

"If we or others find otherwise based on further review, we will report it immediately", she said.

The Zuma payload was built for the government by Northrop Grumman. The catalogued object dubbed USA-280 could have been in error, as occurred after a failed Landsat satellite launch in the 1990s, or the payload may no longer be in orbit, assuming it re-entered with the Falcon 9 upper stage within a few hours of launch.

The entire episode regarding the nature of the failed launch began after the Satellite, code-named Zuma failed to reach the space.

On Tuesday, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell released an even stronger statement and pushed back against reports that a second-stage malfunction may have been to blame, saying that "after review of all data to date, Falcon 9 did everything correctly on Sunday night".

After reports Monday that the satellite suffered some sort of failure, SpaceX rushed to defend its reputation, denying that it had done anything wrong.

"I would have to refer you to SpaceX, who conducted the launch", Defense Department spokeswoman Dana White said repeatedly during a briefing with reporters at the Pentagon.

In 2015, SpaceX was certified by the U.S. Air Force to launch national security satellites. "We can not discuss classified programs".

Falcon Heavy launches start at $90 million, compared to the starting price of $62 million for the smaller Falcon 9, according to SpaceX's website.

That in itself was a statement: "They're not going to launch again if they think there's a chance it was their fault", said Todd Harrison, a defense analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Also, the future flights of SpaceX will remain scheduled as they were.

The GovSat 1 satellite is set to launch on the next Falcon 9 rocket mission.

During a livestream of Sunday's launch, SpaceX said it got successful confirmation that the fairing - the clamshell-like covering for payloads at the tip of the rocket - did deploy. Its classified mission was intentionally inscrutable - whether to detect missile launches, spy on adversaries, or to track ship at sea with a space radar.

In the meantime, Falcon Heavy, like its smaller cousin the Falcon 9, will advance SpaceX's goal of cutting launch costs by reusing rockets.
