Should Oprah Winfrey Run for President?

Golden Globes 2018 A night of many beginnings and first wins

In the wake of 2017's #MeToo movement, Hollywood actresses announced that they'd be wearing all black to this year's Golden Globes in protest against sexual harassment in the industry.

Her speech upon receiving the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement was highly praised, and many even encouraged her to run for president. Sunday's Globes are considered wide open, with contenders including Guillermo del Toro's "The Shape of Water", Steven Spielberg's "The Post" and Martin McDonagh's "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri". "At least they managed to elect a female president", she said.

Numerous female recipients, including Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern, both of "Big Little Lies", spoke about the need for the telling of women's stories and the change those stories can bring.

"So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon!" she said in the final moments of her remarks. Exasperated, Streisand held up both of her arms and expressed disbelief at a woman's not winning for a director role in more than 34 years.

She wrote: "Just saw @Oprah's empowering and inspiring speech at last night's #GoldenGlobes". Kidman chalked the win up to "the power of women". Numerous women who accepted awards used their platform to speak to the power of women's stories and praise women in Hollywood and beyond.

If the speculation is wishful thinking, Winfrey's fame and wealth, extraordinary personal story overcoming poverty, teenage rape and pregnancy to build a $2.6 billion fortune and Oscar-nominated acting career, would stack up nicely in her favor.

Several nominees brought activists as guests, notably Meryl Streep, who walked the carpet the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Ai-jen Poo, and Michelle Williams, who was joined by #MeToo founder and civil rights activist Tarana Burke. "Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell, and this year we became the story". She lived as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men.

As an actress in a female-led series, she acknowledged her fellow cast members" commitment and allegiance to each other, as she said, "This is ours to share.

The emotional Mexican-born filmmaker's acceptance speech was an ode to his love affair with monsters.

Before the ceremony, NBC and the givers of the Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, had tried to assure viewers that the event would be as frothy as ever. Kirk Douglas, 101, appearing with his daughter-in-law, Catherin Zeta-Jones, received a warm standing ovation. Winfrey also made note of women and their role amidst the spectre of sexual harassment from male figures of power, proudly proclaiming about these power-exploiting men "their time is up".

Hollywood stands united in black.

The movie, about a mother who campaigns to pressure local authorities to solve the rape and murder of her daughter, was already a likely Oscar nominee but presumably had its status bolstered, as academy voters fill out their ballots this week in advance of the January 23 announcement. It gave us more freedom.

"Too much recent press attention has been focused on perpetrators and does not adequately address the systematic nature of violence including the importance of race, ethnicity and economic status in sexual violence and other forms of violence against women", the women added.

Cristina Ehrlich, another stylist to the stars, is also a supporter of the Time's Up movement, sharing a photo of a showroom filled with black gowns, tagging actresses Alison Brie, Laura Dern, Penelope Cruz and Yvonne Strahovski.

Under the theme "time's up", celebrities lined the red carpet in black, and some used their acceptance speeches to comment on the need to confront abuse in the industry.
