Five shot during violent clashes between migrants in Calais

Migrants living in the 'Jungle' migrant camp walk past a sign posted along a road that leads to the town of Calais in northwestern France

"Around 150-200 Eritreans migrants armed with sticks were attacking around 20 Afghans", according to reports, with police eventually stepping in to help diffuse the violence and protect the victims. Police are searching for a 37-year-old Afghan man suspected to have taken part in the shooting, according to the France 24 website.

A fight pitting Afghan migrants against African migrants started Thursday afternoon close to a hospital where meals were being distributed, France Info reported.

Earlier this month, President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Theresa May signed a treaty to speed up the processing of migrants in Calais.

Fighting broke out between Afghans and Eritreans on least five different sites in and around the northern French port.

Crucially, Macron did not seek to renegotiate a controversial 2003 deal effectively pushing Britain's borders back onto French soil.

He has vowed to step up deportations while speeding up waiting times for bona fide asylum seekers an approach he touts as mixing "humanity" and "efficiency".

Two police officers were injured during the clashes and security reinforcements were deployed.

Mr Macron also travelled to the United Kingdom where Prime Minister Theresa May agreed to pay more to help stop migrants reaching the United Kingdom, and to take in more minors who are without their family.

Many migrants travel to Calais with hopes of finding a better life and crossing the channel over to Britain.

Aid organizations in Calais said that violent outbreaks would recur if the French government did not improve conditions for migrants stuck in legal limbo.

Firearms are rare among migrants.

The migrants have the option of going to reception centers where they can apply for asylum in Calais or elsewhere around the country.

Ms Bernard said limits and severe delays in the family reunification process and the Dubs Amendment were leaving children with a right to come to Britain languishing in Calais, with many of them caught up in the violence.

Calais remains a magnet for hundreds of young people determined to reach the UK.

Police tackling the riots using batons and teargas as they worked to restore order in Calais.

However, humanitarian organizations say Europe's convoluted asylum process makes it almost impossible for people to get the help they need.

The grim conditions, made worse by a particularly wet winter, have led to tensions between groups of migrants from different regions that sometimes spills over into violence.
