Florida school shooting survivors plan march on Washington

'Shame on you,' student tells Trump at Florida anti-gun rally

Students who escaped the deadly school shooting in Florida focused their anger Sunday at President Donald Trump, contending that his response to the attack has been needlessly divisive.

"How dare you", he added.

Another student, David Hogg, ripped Trump for suggesting in a tweet Saturday night that Democrats had let them down by failing to pass gun-control legislation when they held Congress. Trump also alluded to the FBI's failure to act on tips that the suspect was unsafe, while bemoaning the bureau's focus on Russia's role in the 2016 election. Some teens have been critical of Trump for failing to mention guns in his comments about the attack. "He wouldn't have harmed that many students with a knife".

Florida politicians, meanwhile, scrambled to produce legislation in response to the February 14 attack that killed 17 people.

Israel said the alleged killer, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, is in solitary confinement under suicide watch.

In a TV interview, Republican Sen. They say they can be used to unfairly take away rights from people who have not been convicted of crimes, nor professionally evaluated for mental illness.

Ms Gonzalez said the victims of the shooting would be "the kids you read about in textbooks". He is expected to announce a legislative package with GOP leaders of the legislature this week.

"To every politician taking donations from the NRA, shame on you!" said student Emma Gonzalez, who criticised Donald Trump for the multi-million dollar support the USA president has received from the powerful gun lobby group, the National Rifle Association.

In a study published a year ago, researchers at Duke, Yale, Connecticut and Virginia estimated that dozens of suicides have been prevented by the law, roughly one for every 10 gun seizures carried out.

The students have vowed to become the face of a movement for tighter firearm regulations and plan to visit the state capitol in Tallahassee this week to demand immediate action.

The students said they are organizing "March for Our Lives" rallies in Washington and other major US cities on March 24 to demand action on gun violence.

Just a short drive from the anti-gun protest in Florida, other Americans were stocking their private arsenals at a gun show like this 2016 Miami weapons market.

The rally in downtown Fort Lauderdale gave a political outlet to the growing feelings of rage and mourning sparked by the carnage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. She reminded the crowd that students had reported Cruz for years and nothing had come of it.

Chad Bennett, a friend of Deschamps', said Cruz "chose the gun and he left". "There's always a way around it". "Since [the accused shooter] was in middle school", she replied. The caller was concerned Cruz could attack a school.

Earlier, Florida's child welfare agency investigated after Cruz cut himself in an online video, but found him stable, according to state records. Andrew Pollack yelled, referring to Nikolas Cruz, who is accused of gunning down Meadow and 16 others. The investigator said Cruz was suffering from depression and on medication and had told Lynda Cruz he planned to buy a gun, but she couldn't determine why. According to Cruz, they were traitors. But how were we supposed to know what would happen? "We didn't see this side of him". "It's as simple as that".

The NRA's lobbying arm has said such laws enable courts to remove Second Amendment rights "based on third-party allegations and evidentiary standards" that are lower than what's required in criminal proceedings. He carried out the rampage armed with a legally obtained AR-15 rifle which he wielded with expertise gained as a graduate of "gun education" courses sponsored by the National Rifle Association. They said "yes" once and "no" once. Their mistakes have cost the lives of 17 people.

Cruz sent their son a few texts that day.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement Friday that the agency is conducting a review of what went wrong.

This story has been corrected to reflect that James Ciaramello is a freshman and did not supervise Cruz.

Associated Press writers Gary Fineout in Tallahasse, Florida, Tamara Lush in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Nicholas Riccardi in Denver contributed.
