Former Google employee suing over alleged wrongful firing

Former Google employee files lawsuit alleging the company fired him over pro-diversity posts

Chevalier mainly blames the internal social-networking platforms employees use to discuss happenings in the company, their jobs and hobbies.

This is the second time in recent months that Google has been hit with a discrimination lawsuit.

A former Google employee is now suing the company, claiming he was wrongfully terminated for his criticism of an anti-diversity memo sent to staff members past year, Wired Magazine reports.

Chevalier explained in the lawsuit that he used the same internal message system to respond the offensive messages the bullies had left, and to educate his employer as well as other workers.

James Damore is also now suing Google for wrongful termination and discrimination - specifically, against conservatives and white men. Mr. Damore and Harmeet Dhillon, his lawyer, said that the tech giant discriminated white men who have different political perspectives than the Google executives.

The suit quoted directly an alleged interaction between employees that stated "if we have fewer Black and Latin@ people here, doesn't that mean they're not as good" as well as suggesting that encouraging employment of people from some minority groups forced Google to lower their qualifications to work there.

Chevalier is described in his lawsuit as an "accomplished software developer and computer scientist" who joined Google as a Site Reliability Engineer in December 2015.

The lawsuit was filed in San Francisco County Superior Court and Chevalier is seeking damages for lost wages, emotional distress, punitive damages, and injunctive relief against those alleged harmful acts. In his memo, Damore had claimed that women may have less aptitude for jobs like that of engineering because of biological reasons and not sexism. Shortly after the memo began to make national headlines, he was sacked by Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

Damore recently had a separate labour board complaint shot down by the US National Labor Relations Board, which stated in a guidance memo that Google was in the right to fire him. The agency said Google fired the computer engineer not for expressing dissenting views or criticism, but over "unprotected discriminatory statements" in his memo. "But like any workplace, that doesn't mean anything goes", Google spokeswoman Gina Scigliano told The Daily Caller News Foundation. "All employees acknowledge our code of conduct and other workplace policies, under which promoting harmful stereotypes based on race or gender is prohibited".

"The overwhelming majority of our employees communicate in a way that is consistent with our policies", Scigliano continued.

Tim Chevalier, a site reliability engineer, took his former employers to court claiming he was sacked in November 2017 for criticising Damore and promoting diversity on internal forums. "We always make our decisions without any regard to the employee's political views".
