Google reportedly shipped 3.9 million Pixel and Pixel 2 devices in 2017

IDC says Google shipped 3.9 million Pixel devices in 2017

Finally, Google was stepping in to own both the hardware and software and provide a bloatware-free Android experience. Samsung, with a wider range of price points, is the smartphone sales leader with 317.3 million phones shipped in 2017, according to IDC. Google launched the Pixel 2 in October a year ago.

Look, I get it, the Pixel's still the new guy on the block.

This number includes the Pixel smartphones and the Pixel 2 released near the end of 2017. The Pixel phones were supposed to be Google's answer to Apple's iPhones.

Google won't say how many Pixel phones it shipped in 2017, but one analyst from the research firm IDC has a number: 3.9 million. Let's talk about numbers.

The Google Pixel phones have been very well received since they first appeared in 2016. The company needed a whole year to sell as many Pixels as iPhone units Apple sells in a week. That's not a massive number, but it shows great growth for the company's lineup. For comparison, Apple typically has sales stats showing over a million iPhones sold per day. The Cupertino company had shipped 77.3 million iPhones in the holiday shopping season.

In this respect, the Pixel is no different from the Nexus phones that came before it.

Turns out, though, that while it may be vocal, that user base isn't exactly huge.

The Android versus iOS war may often be phrased in terms of Pixel vs iPhone, but new sales stats for Google's Pixel suggest there's a long way to go before Apple needs to be anxious. By now, most people have already picked sides and the customer lock-in for iPhone and Samsung is strong.

Google occasionally dabbles with pop-up stores for the holidays, and it has some dedicated displays inside electronics stores, but it's missing a standalone retail presence. Over 90 percent of phone sales are sold through carriers.

Why Can't Google Pixel Catch Up To The iPhone?

Carrier deals make a huge difference in a country where nearly all phones are sold via carriers.

As Huawei and many Chinese phone makers have learned, the key to the us market is through carriers.

As hinted above, Google could have more success in attracting consumers by expanding the availability of the Pixel line.

In comparison, the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus sold 20 million devices in around four months previous year. Its smartphones compete against the best the market has to offer, featuring cutting-edge hardware, vanilla Android and, unlike many of its droid-toting siblings, three years of support. HMD is now the world's sixth largest smartphone vendor.
