Israeli police arrest telecom officials in corruption probe 'linked to Netanyahu'

Israel fears that Iran, which is supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, is seeking to entrench itself militarily next door.

Netanyahu renewed his call to "fix or nix" the global deal to curb Iran's nuclear programme, a message that has failed to sway much of the trans-Atlantic security establishment represented in Munich.

Israel and Saudi Arabia delivered twin warnings to Iran, telling a global security conference it's time to confront the Islamic republic's encroachment on the Middle East.

According to a Ynet report, an Israel Securities Authority probe into Bezeq ties the telecommunications company's largest shareholder, Shaul Elovitch, received favors from the prime minister in return for favorable coverage of Mr. Netanyahu on the Walla News website.

"We know what the world looks like without the Iran nuclear agreement", he said Sunday, speaking at the same conference.

Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif. "This is a very risky development for our region".

"The hour for preventing war is getting late", he said.

Lebanon's Defence Minister, Yacoub Riad Sarraf, who spoke after Netanyahu, warned against intervention: "Watch out, we will defend ourselves. we also have friends".

Israel has largely attempted to avoid getting entangled in the Syrian civil war, but both Iran and Hezbollah's presence in Syria and Hezbollah's acquisition of advanced weaponry, potentially including a nascent precision strike capability, present a new and significant threat.

He delivered a stern denunciation of the Iranian leadership and criticized a landmark 2015 global deal to curb Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for an easing of sanctions, saying it has not moderated Iran "internally or externally".

"Another baseless investigation under pressure from the media", a statement from Netanyahu said. "They're aggressive, they are developing ballistic missiles, they're not inspecting, they have a free highway to massive (uranium) enrichment", he said of the fuel needed for nuclear weapons.

He added: "We will never forget and we will never allow the rewriting of the historical truth". "It's not a better place".

Three years later, Iran and the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany reached a nuclear agreement which Netanyahu fiercely opposed and made every effort to scuttle negotiations but to no avail. "That's fundamentally not accurate", he said.

The Israeli police have said there was ample evidence for Netanyahu to be indicted for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in two separate cases.
