Lauding girls who received the vote, Britain's Could says…

Dr Micheline Sheehy Skeffington reenacted her grandmother's protest

The struggle to win the vote was long and arduous, but in 1918 these courageous women won.

Britain's interior minister said the government will consider pardoning convicted suffragettes on the 100th anniversary of some British women winning the right to vote.

Campaigners meanwhile hope to make fresh calls for Suffragettes who were jailed while fighting to win the vote for women to be pardoned posthumously.

Suffragettes and Suffragists both campaigned for a change in the law which would grant women the right to vote, but favoured different methods.

Pankhurst, who was arrested numerous times, led angry street demonstrations at which hundreds of suffragists were arrested.

In the crackdown ordered by Winston Churchill, then the home secretary, police officers punched marchers and "pulled on women's breasts", according to local media reports.

In 1918, the Representation of the People Act was passed, giving women over the age of 30, and who owned a certain amount of property, the right to vote.

The name "suffragettes" was actually given by The Daily Mail to the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) as a derogatory term in 1906.

"I have seen this campaign, I completely understand where it's coming from, the extraordinary pained campaign, violence that these women went through in order to deliver the vote, which has been of such benefit to us for generations", she said.

Referencing the exclusion of some women from enfranchisement in 1918, novelist and broadcaster Bonnie Greer said political life for a woman is still "different, harder, less rewarding, more unsafe than it is for a man".

Ms Rudd said the issue was "complicated" when looking at cases of arson and violence, but promised to analyse individual proposals.

Known as the anti-suffrage movement, these women had been working to oppose the suffragettes.

On Wednesday 6 February, 1918, women were first able to vote in this country after women fought tirelessly to have equality within the voting system.

Mr Corbyn told his top team that the convictions of suffragettes "were politically motivated and bore no relation to the acts committed".

"I was quite fascinated by these postcards because not many people have done research on them, and I thought they were telling a message of how hard it was for women at that time to be taken seriously", she says. After war broke out with Germany, an estimated two million women took traditionally male jobs, replacing men who had gone to fightPAPankhurst, her sister Mary Jane Clarke, Charlotte Marsh and Jessie Kelly are greeted by crowds after their release from Holloway prison in 1908.

The academic said there was "common ground" between Suffragism and groups such as the recent #MeToo movement against sexual harassment.

Fear of such attacks prompted museums to request women leave their bags and coats in cloakrooms, to stop activists concealing weapons, but a century on the Suffragettes have themselves become exhibition subjects.

"Membership was possible for all women and from all social classes", which helped in building momentum, she said.
